In the old Sun Belt Days when South was averaging 3-4k and packing in 9K for UAB or UNCC, GaSU Was doing 350 - 500 ( with 200 or less showing up.. At least at the 5 or 6 games I attended) . Last year in baseball they drew 386 for a home game against crosstown rival Tech . We sell over twice that number in season tickets for baseball, get 3-4 K for Bama or Auburn, and we are way DOWN right now.
This is not a us against them post or even a we are better post. Schools who have had a history of fans attending games have a much easier time expanding into other sports or expanding the fan base. GaSU will get it done I believe, but it will be a work in progress even if they win some. Win the conference in 3 years..beat a big FBS and all bets are off.

One can not take an athletic program which was for years met with what would be apathy at best and make it the darling of the city in a short time.

They had it in the palm of their hands in 2010 and let it slip away. Amd its just G-S-U 03-wink
Panama - maybe you could convince the administration to get a marketing company, you probably have some GaSt grad that owns one, to do some additional marketing for GaSt. Make sure they hire a great new coach that is well fit to take on the unique job at GaSt. Have the administration promote or hire her replacement as the future AD, and have them put her on fund raising or something she would be comfortable doing or could do well. You are going to have your ups and downs. Remember, "Mama said there would be times like this." Will make it all that much sweeter when they really make something out of the program.

2012/Georgia State/ODU/UTSA/So. Alabama

Average home attendance/13,298/20,068/28,079/16,190

Season tickets sold/4,025/14,200/13,000/8,319

That would be 4,025 from original post in the thread.

This is why I am so high on ODU's long term fan base potential. They have already built up a season ticket base that would rival most of C-USA, and that's not including their waiting list. Getting high numbers of fans invested to buy season tickets is so important. It allows you to ride out a down year and makes fans feel almost like owners in the program. I feel like this is always going to be an issue for GSU. I don't know how playing in the dome they are going to make it be viewed as important to be a season ticket holder. Realistically you can get a ticket for any game on the schedule right up until game time probably for very cheap. How do you motivate people to donate money and buy season tickets when they can easily just pick and choose what games they want to go to based on who you play or how you are playing?
panama you don't have to live somewhere to understand the positives and negatives of the area. I haven't lived in Boone for over 10 years, or the Raleigh area for 15 years but have knowledge enough to speak to those areas. Atlanta I know well enough.

They are able to sale season tickets for three reasons, they had a successful athletic department prior to adding football, they started with smaller stadium (supply/demand), and they won.

One of the these programs is not like the other.

Agree 100%. I told people privately 3 years ago that new car smell wears off fast for a startup. The decisions you make in the beginning decide whether you become UAB or USF 10 years later.
The stadium is a terrible liability. You can't take a potential commit to a game and let them experience that (complete lack of) atmosphere. It always looks empty on TV, which also hurts interest from potential fans.

It's totally natural for people to want to be part of something, a shared group experience. In college football, that means a big and enthusiastic crowd.

But here's the thing: a sold out house is always perceived to be a big crowd -- whether it's a 15k stadium or an 80k stadium. So I'll say it again: Get a stadium that fits the program. It can be a palace with luxury suites and the works (work with MLS to bring a soccer team in, as well), but it needs to be small and expandable just in case. I'd say 20k or slightly less. Build demand, then build out..

Good Luck! Go Sun Belt!
We just need to fill the lower bowl in the stadium we're in
schedule ga southern i know that game will bring 45k - 50k. the biggest misconception is that all of our attendance comes from the city of statesboro. the city of stb only makes up about 10-15% of the crowds which meams the potential for growth is huge there alone. the remainder of our fans come from the surrounding counties atl, aug, macon and sc. huge alumni and fan base in atl

+1

Very true, I know a ton of Georgia Southern folks in Metro Atlanta and they would love to come watch their team play State in any sport. With the right handling, it could be a Great rivalry.

Eagles would even turn up for a game against Kennesaw or whoever. It is a truly devoted fanbase.
