That is an unacceptable explanation. He is saying that we can't stop anybody.

It is like saying one would rather die from a million paper cuts......

Well, he's right, we can't but we are fourth in the MAC in PPG on D, although the teams on what appeared to be a challenging OOC schedule are looking more like poseurs every day. CCU might be the second best team we've played.

Has he tried to stop AZ, BG, or CCU to know that we can't? With conference, there's not much room for experimenting but as others have mentioned, I would have liked to see if they could manage a little bump and run and man on the coverage while LB's and DE's try to pressure the QB instead of dropping to coverage. Make the pass difficult as opposed to make the reception and yardage difficult. Is he saying we cannot match speed at the corners/safety?

I've seen Norrill's instinct on man coverage. High school I know but he played against some pretty good QB-WR combos. Receptions were difficult against him and he usually came away with the ball at least once, every game. If he is against someone who he matches up with on speed, I like him in man.
I like molls, Robinson, norrils, fatinuken, singer, jones, Farr, pike, Lewis, bell, and Best on D. Obviously some are injured, and we can't play all of these guys all the time. The D line is pretty good, even with Farr out. The LB's are good too, but they aren't coverage LB's. Our starting safeties are great but after them there isn't a ton of depth there, and the corners are raw. The freshman do deserve leniency... I think Dukes will be one hell of a player in the years to come.

How do we improve this? Get healthy, keep practicing hard, and look at film. I personally think we should make our defense play against T.O, Alonzo, and Reedy in practice. Those guys will make you pay for slip ups, and it wouldn't be a bad idea for them to learn to catch the ball over the middle of the field!
