Orange Bowl Eyes USF

TAMPA - Orange Bowl chief executive officer Keith Tribble will attend Saturday's University of South Florida-West Virginia game to scout the teams as possible Orange Bowl participants.

The Orange Bowl chooses either the Big East or Atlantic Coast Conference champion as its anchor team. WVU (6-1, 3-0) is the Big East's only unbeaten, while USF (3-3, 1-1) is one of the league's five one-loss teams.

"The Big East is one of our partners and I've made a commitment to go to each one of the new schools," Tribble said. "I thought it would be a good game when I circled it and West Virginia is leading the conference and South Florida is trying to be the spoiler and get back in the race."

Orange Bowl media relations director Joe Hornstein, a 1995 USF graduate, and a Motor City Bowl representative, also will attend.

On one hand, i have to admit it's pretty great that USF is being scouted by one of the traditional Big 4 bowls. Orange Bowl reps at USF is something i doubted i'd ever see. It's great.

But, tempering that happiness is that the "interest" hasn't been earned. USF is, by all accounts, about the 40th best team in the country and unlikely to rise much higher. And if you say that the Orange is really at the game to scout WVU, well thay ares about the 23rd best team, and unlikely to crack the top 15.

The Orange Bowl is usually reserved for teams that rank in the top 10.

So why is the Orange scouting USF and WVU? They *have to*, by the contract that gives the Big East an automatic bid no matter how unworthy their champion is. That's a bad reason, but they have no choice.... :frown:

-- just wondering where you got #23....according the BCS computers...WVU is #12 this week and #20 according to the human polls....if WVU wins out they will certainly be in the top 15

Can you please write 35 more posts on how bad the BE is? I'm not sure you have sufficiently clarified your stance as yet.

23rd is probably a little low, 20 is about right.

The BCS computers have WVU at 12 only because of the constraints the BCS puts on the computers. For example, WVU is 11 in the BCS Massey ratings, but in the "real" Massey ratings, the one Massey would use if the BCS didn't force him to change it, WVU is 22.

We see the same thing in Sagarin (WV is 25 in the BCS version, they'd be about 34th in the real version).

Overall, the 82 difference computer formulas have WV at 19. The human pollsters have them at 20, so 20 is about right.

And if they do rise to around 15, it won't be because of any good wins they achieve (since they don't have any credible tough opponents left). It will be because they beat the lousy teams on their schedule while higher-ranked teams lose to tough opponents.

Jackson, you know as well as anyone on this board that this guy is an idiot who has no credibility, non whatsoever. He changes his opinions and distorts quotes and facts every other post. In short, he is a genuine idiot.

He also overlooks the fact that if WV does move up in the polls, which they certainly will if they win out, it will be for a number of reasons, not just who loses ahead of them. But if the Ville also wins out, as well as Maryland ends up going to a bowl, those defeated teams will rise in the rankings which will also cause WV to rise in the rankings.

Not really. Merit is what matters. WV was badly beaten in their only tough OOC game. What does it matter if they beat all the patsies on their schedule? A rank based on that doesn't mean much, does it?
This is the system that we are under. Like it or not learn to live with it.

Hell if Louisville can use the real Sagrain rating our Sagrain rating would be 24th. Instead using the Elo Chess rating it is in the 30s.

Fact is if WVU runs the table more then likely they will end up in the Top 10. A 10-1 WVU would be in the Top 10 in both Human Poll and most likely the Computers as well. Just learn to live with it.
Will somebody please ban this troll?
