No talk of a downtown arena for a while and now the KWings are going to put 2 million into their arena. Maybe we are safe from this albatross.

thank. god. even though i don't live there and the drive wouldn't affect me any different anymore, having lawson on campus is HUGE for the environment we get there
Good. Let's concentrate on making what we've got as good as possible.

(New sound system plz)
Agreed. Upgrade Lawson. New sound system, new video boards and/or a new scoreboard, upgrade the press box (from what I hear it's pretty outdated) and do some repainting. Lawson is by no means a bad place as it is and the right upgrades could make it special.

They did some major air conditioning work over the summer and have repainted. Too bad they don't have 2 million to spend on updating the facilities.

The pressbox is so, so small. Somewhat outdated, and the internet needs a re-wiring or something.

As for everything else, that also needs to happen, and more seating would be nice.

Someone figure out a way to get a couple million out of the people that wanted to blow $100 million on a downtown arena? For anything over say, $8 million, we'll call it ______ rink at Lawson Ice Arena for them. 02-13-banana
Soliciting donations from those in favor of a downtown arena would be a smart move IMO. If we can have Robert J. Bobb Stadium, we could certainly have an "Insert Name Here" Rink at Lawson Arena. Keep in mind that not all of these upgrades need to happen at once. Small, incremental improvements can be a good way to go to keep from spending as much at once and it may be easier to get donations that way.

I thought the upgrade this past summer was to the cooling system for the ice, not the air-conditioning. Maybe I'm mis-remembering though. Nice to hear about the repainting. I had not hear about that.

hell, if they raise the roof a bit in lawson it'd make a HUGE difference

Actually, they did both.

That strikes me as pricey. I think there was discussion (and even plans) for that back in 1999 or whatever (Taz would know for sure), but lifting ceilings probably doubles the cost.

My short wishlist would be a decent sized video board on the wall above the chairback section, an upgraded audio system and a new press box.

I'd remove parts of the wall behind the bench side on the courtwalk to widen that side, but that might not mesh well with new AC to cool the surface.
I don't recall "roof raising" being a part of the previous plans. I would think that could potentially be more costly than building a whole new arena. The plans did call for the press box, student section and Bronco team bench to be moved to opposite sides of the rink from where they are now, but as a part of that, the Bronco locker room was going to be moved to the area under the bleachers on the (now) student side and include a weight room as well as locker room for the syncro skating team. The team would come out where the Zamboni entrance is now. There would be more seating added on the (now) student side once the press box was moved, but again, I don't recall raising the roof to be part of that. I'm traveling right now so I can't go dig the plans out for a closer look. Sorry.
Thanks for the info on the upgrades Bronco1974.

I like the idea of opening up walking area on the bench side to create more of a concourse. That would be really nice. Open up the areas around the concession stand and it would make for a good meeting place. I'm wondering if it's structurally possible though, or what the cost of something like that would be.
It is kind of funny that we didn't realize until we had fans again "Oh yeah, the walkways are kind of narrow."
Speak of the devil. This disastrous plan still lives. We need a stake and a hammer.

Quote:Meanwhile, backers of a downtown arena have not met as a group in more than a year, according to Miller.

I think he's just spouting off to deny that this zombie isn't dead despite the Wings Stadium announcement implying that.

I hope you are right. This would be a big step backward for Bronco hockey.
Well, not to get too much into politics, but the environment hasn't gotten much better to try to shove this sort of thing through. 2010 was "Fark paying more taxes" and now there's still plenty of that and also "Fark giving the rich anything."

I'd be more worried that they'd try to find a way to pass something without having a public vote on it.

That's how Maricopa County got the baseball tax passed after it was voted down twice. The playbook is out there, many other circumstances/examples. Sad but true.
