Here we are today, two games into the 2012 season, and Conference USA and the Sun Belt are neck-and-neck along the bottom of the F.B.S. – these are the two worst conferences in the country. How bad is it for Conference USA? It’s worse than you think.

Ouch!
That's a brutal assessment.
..author spends a lot of time bashing Houston but doesn't note that Houston is leaving C-USA for the Big Least next year. Still, things don't seem posed to get any better for C-USA as they dilute the conference down with DIA "newbies" USTA, Charlotte, among other additions soon to come on with UCF, Houston, SMU and Memphis all bolting for greener pastures. I really think that the MAC has an opportunity to end being a better football conference than C-USA and arguably equal already although we also are bringing in UMASS which hurts our overall league power ratings.

The MAC's goal is to remain competitive and let our 'enemies' (e.g., C-USA) implode,

And they are done a good job of it.
Now, a caveat...all this talk of the MAC being equal and on track to being superior gets unhinged if one of our top football teams this year, the mighty Bobcats, lose to C-USA perienniel also ran Marshall. For sake of league reputation, this is a big game and I hope OU is up to the task because Marshall can score points but has a porous defense.

NIU intends on taking out a not-so-hot Kansas at Huskies Stadium next week. Fingers crossed...

Yeah, the MAC had one strong OOC win, but is going mainly on close losses. Definitely need more OOC wins.

Half their coaching staff was at Akron last year. You guys should have absolutely no problem.

How can you tell? I never know who's in CUSA anymore.

Torch not only gets points for making me chuckle with that comment, but in reality he's really making a good point which reminds me of how hilarious the C-USA BBS board is from time to time......if UCF gets a good win, then everyone applauds but if a UCF poster gets outta line (which as you guys remember from when UCF was in the MAC happens all the time with some of their mouthy fans), then UCF is bashed as no longer being associated with C-USA (comments like " Big East board this a-way", etc.). Same with Houston, Memphis and SMU now that their administrators are smart enough to get them out of that mis-mash mess that C-USA is becoming. Also, their second favorite "sport" over there (after bashing all things non C-USA) is attendance smack. Fun to see them "slug it out" over having the embarassment of Tulane only having 14K on hand vs someone else having a huge throng of 27K or whatever (as if anyone outside of C-USA cares...BCS programs "throw back" any crowd under 50K except for the ACC). They are a really "fun" bunch and I really do get a kick out of some their threads.
SBC is quickly gaining ground on the CUSA, as is the MAC in my opinion.
Now that ND has left the Big East for the ACC (non football although the ACC got their "pound of flesh" on football scheduling don't ya know), isn't it about time for the BE to poach another C-USA squad so that C-USA can look for yet another DIA "newbie". If no one in FCS is available, maybe they can just find a DII program that wants to make a big leap! Well, maybe not so big.

Well to be fair we are not quite as vocal about our displeasure with some of those teams as much as some Sun Belt team fans are but it makes sense if you think about it. You both directly compete with each other. CUSA and the Belt play and recruit mostly the same areas and so you two going after each other makes sense. The only team that really gets close to the MAC is Marshal and you will note that is one of the areas where MAC and CUSA fans get a little sore.

You also have similar attitudes though obviously in different eras. CUSA is later in their life (or at least feel more established in general) of their teams whereas the Belt teams are younger trying to be on the rise against those teams.
The MAC didn't have a very good day today (although if BSU can beat IU in addition to NIU and OU wins it won't be so bad of a day), but how 'bout C-USA. Forgetting playing FCS teams and conference games, here's the tally:

The good:

UTEP beat New Mexico St 41-14

The OK:

UCF beat lowly FIU, 33-20 in unimpressive fashion.

And, the not so good:
Marshall loses at home to OU of the MAC, 27-24

And the ugly:

Texas A & M beats SMU 48-3
Middle Tenn State beats Memphis 48-30
La Tech (who C-USA posters just love to bash!) over Rice, 56-37
..and S. Carolina 49-6 over UAB.
P.S. Houston losing 14-zip to UCLA in the 1st qtr.

Ah, the "next" BCS conference, C-USA.
After Week 3, the consensus toward C-USA being the worst conference continues. The MAC is rising to the top of the non-aq conferences. Can only hurt C-USA TV money and help the next MAC TV contract.

Conference USA: While Conference USA won some games this weekend, it didn't get the signature win for which it was hoping and Houston and SMU both were blown out. Marshall had a chance to beat Ohio and ruin its dream of a perfect season, but fell short. After Western Kentucky's by win over Kentucky, Conference USA becomes the worst conference in the country.

Good job Marshall, you are in the WORST conference. LOL

Ah, the "next" BCS conference, C-USA.

The score didn't reflect the win for UCF, IMO. It was 23-0 at halftime but we came out completely flat. We also somehow gave back a fumble on FIU's 2 yard line that eventually led to FIU points (would have made the game 37-14). We also had a late TD called back due to a phantom holding calls (44-14).

We had 140 more yards, held the ball for 11 minutes more, and averaged 8.2 yards per pass play. FIU was in the game due to 2 UCF turnovers and a bad 2nd half start.
The Sagarin's this week still show CUSA to be a nudge better than the MAC.

Week #3 Sagarin's:

MWC 66.15
CUSA 62.78
WAC 60.23
SBC 60.08
MAC 59.69

How strong will the conferences be with the 2013 lineups? That is the real question.

2013 lineups:

MWC 65.56
CUSA 62.13
MAC 59.69
SBC 56.60

CUSA is adding some rising teams like North Texas and LaTech for next year to retain football strength. FIU is decent as well. UTSA has a ways to go. Charlotte and ODU don't join until 2015.
Sagarin's don't mean anything yet.
