"The Old Dominion men's and women's golf, men's and women's tennis and women's rowing teams will become members of Conference USA for the 2012-13 season, competing in the league's 2013 Championships."

We're partial CUSA members starting right now.

Release: http://www.conferenceusa.com/genrel/090412aaa.html

Additionally, that release has football joining at a date to be determined, not 2015.

04-cheers
Now to squeeze field hockey and wrestling into the ACC, this whole thing will come together nicely.
Looks like we're going to have a respectable contingent of teams representing the university in CUSA during the 2013-2014 academic year. It's great to have the non-revenue sports get in on the action. The ambiguous join date for ODU football is thought-provoking indeed.
I know we've been having scheduling problems for 2013... Would it be possible to declare this year as our 1st transition year, and then get a waiver from the NCAA to allow for an early move to Division 1A? CUSA Football for 2013???

I can dream can't I?
I wonder if there is a NCAA rule against a transitioning program playing as an associate member in football as long as it is clear that they will not be eligable for conference championship and or bowl consideration?
Heard from 2 reliable sources this weekend that wrestling is probably headed to the MAC, along with Edinboro, Cleveland St., Northern Iowa, & Missouri. That ought to make the JMU contingent happy. Nothing firm, but NCAA is lookin at major conference changes in the next 2 years. Essentially, only the Big 10 & EIWA will remain intact (as presently structured) as qualifiers. Things could certainly change, but it seems pretty legit at this point. Should know more in a few months when the MAC Presidents vote.

You can't get away from the 2 year transition requirement; NCAA Bylaw 20.4

I suspect we could have added 22 schollies this year, as did UMass last year, but that would have voided our current FCS playoff eligibility.
Additionally, I doubt we could have accelerated this process further because of difficulties in scheduling, and, I don't think CUSA allows for affiliate football members anyway.

Why would we be an affiliate member? ODU will be a full member of Conference USA on July 1st, 2013. Whenever we play our first football conference schedule doesn't change that.

Teams can play full conference schedules in their 2nd transition year (See: Texas State, UTSA, UMass, South Alabama all this year) but not be eligible for the conference championship.

How did UTSA do it?

Just a guess, but maybe they had more time to schedule. ODU would have had to scramble big time to have a transition schedule in place for the upcoming year after not even committing until May, and then have a 60% FBS schedule (including the five game home requirement) for the following year.

[Bylaw 20.9.7.2] requires that an FBS school schedule and play at least 60 percent of its football contests against members of Football
Bowl Subdivision. Institutions shall schedule and play at least five regular season home
contests against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents. [Bylaw 20.9.7.2]

But if we got the conference rotation this would be taken care of right? Conference schedules haven't been figured for next year I'd assume. If next year were our 2nd transition year then I'm sure C-USA could accomodate us but since it's our first we're technically FCS and the conference can't force a FCS team on it's members many of whom already have one scheduled. I don't know it honestly confuses me.

I imagine that's what ODU officials will be trying to do.

That would be awesome but I figured GaSt sacrificed thier postseason chances (03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao) this year to make it thier first transition year

That would have been quite a sacrifice for them....:towel:
