Full Version: An Arkansas contract I Could Support

I have been a vocal critic of our series with Arkansas that has been played there for many years. I think it was 1952 or so the last time Arky visited Tulsa. For that reason alone, I think we should not continue this "madness".

However, there is a scenario that I could support that would continue the series. Here is the contract I'd submit as acceptable to the University of Tulsa.

A 6 year contract with the following stipulations:

1. The game shall be played in Little Rock every year, not Fville.

2. Split officiating crews or alternating officials between the SEC and CUSA.

3. The same money guarantee that TU receives in Fville.

Anyone think Arkansas would give up their advantages? Here is why they might. Right now they raid Tulsa and Oklahoma for some pretty valuable recruits. That would be damaged if they don't have some kind of presence in this state.

Little Rock is almost 200 miles from Fville. Tulsa is about 250 from Little Rock. IMO we'd travel about as many fans to War Memorial for an Arky game as Fville, but there'd be 15-20 thousand less Arky fans (Razorback has a cap of 70,000 and WM about 53,000)and an atmosphere that would be less biased than in Fville.

That could be publicised as a "neutral" site of sorts and could be a win for both programs IMO. We could keep a foothold in Arkansas and increase our support in Eastern Oklahoma. Arkansas, who has annual games in LR would increase their presence in our state.

To me, the kind of contracts we should sign should be for more than just money.

Try that for 6 years and if it works, fine. If not, look elsewhere.

OU and Texas meet annually in Dallas, why not do our long time series with Arkansas like that one? IMO
Congratulations to ex-TU coach and native Tulsan Todd Berry for the big win over the Razorbacks. TB is a good coach that hasn't always had the best coaching jobs. Also, I noticed the game was in Little Rock, not Fville. Another reason to schedule them (UA) "wisely".
Bump
Screw 'em......I had the pleasure of going over their one year(early 70's) and watch Tulsa win by one point(they were 35 point underdogs) and the following year Tulsa was an 18 point underdog and they lost by one point....I made some nice money both years!!!! Any way if they can't come over to Tulsa once out of every 3 meetings(2 for 1), screw 'em.....they ain't that big a deal year in and year out. Hell, I would rather do a 2 for 1 with Northwestern or Missouri or even Kansas. I don't think we would lose that much money if a team like those played at Skelly.
BTW. Arkansas lost its second game in Little Rock (ULM, now Ole Miss). Both games UA were favored, I believe. This enforces my belief that all our future games (if we had to) should be in LR.
A little off topic, but I wish we'd get more 1-1 or 2-2 with regional BCS teams (not Oklahoma or Oklahoma St.). When we play our instate rivals at Chapman, it's basically a home game for those morons - but if we played say KU, TCU, Texas Tech, Kentucky, Baylor etc. we would draw more casual fans AND we wouldn't be giving up home field advantage.

Playing OU in Tulsa does nothing but give them an extra home game in Tulsa. Plus I hate having to deal with drunk, jorts wearing, mullet sporting, stained camo OU t-shirt wearing OU fans who want to pick fights for no reason.

Bingo! Also what I hate is when some of our fans choose sides and support them over us. But there's not much we can do about it at the moment.

What I want to see is us cancelling our series with them (OU, OSU or Arky in Fville) for a while until we can reestablish the idea we are a game of preference instead of 2nd, 3rd, 4th choice. But with our league going in a different direction, that may never be the case. We are being forced into too many road warrior games if the conference is less appealing - even moreso than it is now.
