Why every year they change the helmets? Still like the large dragon logo. To establish tradition, leave them alone.
Bet stores who sell the mini helmets and regular size ones agree also.
Jeebus, db...you have got to be trollin' with this. Mackin is sick and tired of "Alabama-Birmingham". Mackin made the decision when he was hired that the letters "UAB" were going to be everywhere on parts of uniforms that get the most screen time on TV and in media pictures. Mackin determined that, in football, that means the helmets. Mackin dictated, in general terms, the current design. I should clarify that I don't know for certain that he dictated the tiny dragon head. I know he recognizes how unique and marketable the dragon head is, but priority #1 (and #2, #3, and #4) on the helmets is the letters "UAB".

I actually was anxious to see if McGee was given leeway to alter that plan. I guess we got our answer. It wouldn't make sense to me if I hadn't been standing next to him a few years ago when the color guy on a televised UAB basketball game called us "Alabama-Birmingham"...Mackin flipped out. I think he would have gone to the table and physically threatened the guy if it had been a home game.

So make some suggestions to him that include the letters. They will be there regardless...

Blazr,
My post obviously wasn't clear. And that was my fault.
I meant what was wrong with LAST year's helmets? I do like the UAB logo on the helmets with the look of LSU. That is what I meant.
I wasn't "trollin" I was making a statement.
I'm becoming schizophrenic about the helmets personally. I think I've changed my mind and now I want something more current Boise St. inspired...

Think a gigantic dragon head on one side (similar to the olden days with D Hack) with a "U A B" on the other side.

The only thing I can't settle on is the font for the lettering. I'm not crazy about either the classic collegiate UAB from our old LSU hats, or the new lettering.

What if we went with OUR classic UAB where the "A" leans on the B? [Image: uab_medium_medium_small.jpg]

The "medical center style"... or whatever we call it.
@Dragonbreath: I have a feeling that sooner or later, the Big Head Dragon will return to the helmets of the UAB football team, & that would make me extremely happy, right now, I'm content with the current look.
The only way to have a BFDH and the lettering is to have two different sides.

I wonder now if anyone has the view that it should be one or the other? If not then the two different sides might be the permanent solution we seek...
@"GoatOnFire" - How's it goin'? Hope you ain't laborin' on Labor Day like I am! ;-)
Here, what do you guys think of this lame photoshop of my idea?

How about scrolling the UAB across the dragon's neck, and/or maybe interlacing the dragon through the A, at the neck?

Sort of the best of both worlds?

Love the one on the left ,on both sides of the helmet is my desired look, hate the one on the right, reminds me too much of the hospital.
Could use U2B.
I don't like the interlocking UAB on the helmets either. I like it in general (on letterhead, buildings, etc.), but not on the helmets.
What about this except with UAB in large font being surrounded by the dragon logo instead of the Blazers?

...this is REALLY close... maybe the UAB 'letterhead' logo IS a bit 'tame' or whatever... I wouldn't mind the UAB they have on them now - with the flames, but just bigger!

OR, how about a 'UAB' just over the brim?

Dude, that looks terrible. The dragon head doesn't even fit. 05-stirthepot
At first, when I saw the helmets on Saturday, I thought they had neither the logo or UAB on it.

I actually thought they might look cool without either.

Have no problems though with having both on their, except the UAB needs to be circular & the dragon head needs to be way larger.

Impossible to distinguish from a distance. That was ultimately the problem with the shield.

My apologies, db. Again, just frustrating for some complaints to come up again and again when literally no one has sent suggestions, or even just the complaint, to Mackin in an email.

To your point, the first item that came up about helmets in the offseason was taking advantage of new paint methods that a lot of schools have started using. At the same time, Mackin knew about general complaints about visibility so a new decal was in the works. Just so happens that both the changes together are arguable less readable than last year's versions.
