I was reading something this week and it made mention that college football players rarely relate to the head coach because, compared to their position coach, they never have any one-to-one interaction with the HC. And if they do it's not good times. I asked Callaway at one of the G&G room events after his first season the biggest difference in being HC and he said, "Patience...because you have to trust in people doing their job. The HC can't decide to micromanage defense in the middle of a game because things aren't going well because it's not setup like that and other areas suffer."

Obviously not the best expert, but you've got to think a lot of that was going on with McGee today. When they penalized us for having two players wearing #4 the camera happened to be on him. You could tell he started to track down who it was and then stopped because our offense was on the field. He yelled at someone off screen to find out and went back to work.
Amen
Agreed. This is just the beginning of his era. Many of the mistakes we made today are very easily correctable. I liked the aggressiveness on blitzes, but we simply can't give up that many off-sides penalties. Not sure what happened on the snap that resulted in the safety, but I'm sure he's going to hear about that and hopefully it won't happen again. Hopefully they'll also learn that it's never a good idea to spot a team 17pts before you actually start to play.
blazr going for the record for Callaway mentions today.

I thought the Stache had a pretty solid gameplan and wasn't outcoached by "keep it down home cuz." Some playcalling offensively was suspect in the 1st qtr, but overall the plan put us in position to win. We simply couldn't capitalize on the opportunity. These guys will learn...I'm very proud of the way they played.
Easy solution. Don't have players wearing the same damn number.

Um, how exactly do you avoid that when you have 99+ suit up ('00' is not allowed anymore)? Granted it's a problem we haven't had in years, but every college football team at our level suits 99+ for home games (less for travel, obviously). In fact, it is explicitly stated in NCAA rules that players can wear the same number as long as they do not take the field at the same time and do not take the field in the same series on the same side of the ball (can't bring out a LB wearing #44 and send on a DE that also wears #44 on the same defensive series).
I don't believe UAB had more than 99 players suit up, but I could be wrong.

If you do have more than 99 players suit up, the players who would be wearing the duplicate numbers shouldn't be playing anyway outside of a blowout.

Is the record 2? And one was in response to the idea that we're in some kind of hole talent-wise...the original poster mentioned him by name. Whoever the previous coach was, the team that came out of the tunnel today is not handicapped whatsoever (which can't always be taken for granted, as we learned painfully post-Brown). I suppose losing 4 starters on the OLine could be called bad personnel planning, but those kind of things happen everywhere...if 4 of your best are seniors, then they'll be the starters.

I'm sure we'll have plenty of legitimate things to argue about this season. Looking for something that's not there doesn't help.

I know, right?!
We also problems with the number 12 today, as in 12 men on the field.
And 5 seconds left on the time clock.

Here's a link to the roster. 102 players. And we know that published roster is not going to include every walk-on. The play was a kick return. That's where you typically see a 3rd-string guy take the field (for any number of reasons). I don't expect it's a goof-up we'll see again.

Also, the main #4 is true freshman Jake Ganus who had just committed a true freshman mistake that allowed a TD. He may be the one who shouldn't have been on the field but he had the previous play still on his mind.

Football roster
There's no excusing burning TWO timeouts after stoppages of play - even if it is a long-standing Blazer tradition. That's organizational culture, and that comes from the top. McGee needs to raise his game.

Had we not given up those two easy touchdowns late, an extra timeout or two could have been crucial.

Other first game coaching:
UTMartin(1AA) 14, Memphis 10, 3rd qtr rain delay[RESTARTED] (at Memphis)
Rutgers 24, Tulane 12 4th qtr (at Tulane)
Texas State 30, Houston 13 FINAL (at Houston))
SMiss 20, Nebraska 49 Final
Oregon 29, Arkansas St 0 1st qtr
FAU 7, Wagner(1AA) 3 (at FAU)
Suddenly , Houston doesn't look so formidable. Could we be 3-3 at the halfway point? If so I'd be feeling pretty good.
Rain delay?

It's raining, but not as hard as some of the UAB games I've seen. Maybe more of a lightening delay

Perhaps I should have simply said " delay". I just assumed...

I know, I know... "ASS" of "U" & "ME"
Every game is different. Different dynamics, different schemes, different matchups, etc. Troy may end up better than we thought. Then again, we might not have a good year at all. But keep in mind that after Troy lost to UAB in 2010, they went on to have a pretty good year. Losing to Troy doesn't have to mean it's the end of the season. I hope our players still recognize that there is a lot of football still to be played.

I think Troy will be pretty good. SunBelt may come down to Troy and La-Lafayette. FIU was destroyed by Duke today and Arkansas St is being obliterated by Oregon. Texas State looks like they want to make noise, too.

I still feel good about UAB and our chances in CUSA. I don't see any team that we cannot beat. I just hate that our 2nd and 3rd games, when the most improvement is made, are against SCarolina and Ohio St. We will get better by those games but it may not look like it. I just hope today's fans give the team a chance...
