Games on ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU are NOT available on ESPN3 live anymore. This changed on Monday. You must subscribe to a cable service that has WatchESPN (TWC, Comcast, BrightHouse, VZ Fios, MidContinent) to watch those games on a tablet, laptop, smartphone, etc..
ESPN3 games going forward are games that will exclusively air on ESPN3, plus GamePlan games.
Example = I have DirecTV and AT&T DSL. I no longer have access to ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU games on ESPN3 because DirecTV does not have a contract for WatchESPN (ie. ESPN's "TV Everywhere" authenticated service). I still have ESPN3 and every game available is either a GamePlan game or an ESPN3 exclusive.
Can you go more in depth on this? I have both things via Comcast TV and internet, but let's say you just have WatchESPN access, do you get the GamePlan games on your laptop/ tablet/ phone?
Someone told me they took away EPL replays. What is the impact on rewatching college games.

If you have Comcast, I'm told they run through the Xfinity.com home page for their TV authentication, so you should be able to watch ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU there and ESPN3 would be available however you are currently accessing it. That includes WatchESPN for ESPN3 & GamePlan.
Should be no impact to replay viewing. Those will continue to be available in ESPN3.

You should have ESPN3, but your best bet is to go to the ESPN3 website and check for yourself
ESPN3 is for ISPs, not cable or satellite companies. If your ISP signed up for ESPN3, then you will get it. It is just another way for ESPiN to squeeze more money out of people.
I believe this will be the way content providers will do business over the Internet. They will treat them the same way like cable companies. They will force ISPs to pay based on per subscriber as more streaming content comes onto the Internet. This also means we will be paying for higher ISP monthly cost going forward.
Oh, okay, I get it now--my access to ESPN3 is unchanged, but they're moving the tv feeds over to WatchESPN. That's fine with me, all the good stuff's on ESPN3 anyway. UMASS-UCONN TONIGHT, PEOPLE!

Yep. If you have a cable system with WatchESPN, no change. If you don't, then there's a difference.

This will be my situation, too. I'm about to switch to Comcast for Internet but keep DirecTV for cable. So, my understanding is that we should be able to access ESPN3 except for the WatchESPN content. It sounds like we won't be able to get the WatchESPN content for mobile devices because we don't have Comcast for cable.

mattsarz - Is it just me or is ESPN's demand to have WatchESPN under separate deals with cable providers (presumably with extra fees) unusual? Most other networks that have subscriber authentication seem to have it for all of the cable providers that they have carriage deals with (the Big Ten Network and the NBC/Comcast channels for the Olympics come to mind).
I wonder if this will cause some ISP's to drop ESPN3, as it would seem that part of why they opted to pay for it, was precisely because of that feature. Sort of reminds me of NetFlix' failed attemtp to branch off it's streaming service from its DVD service.

Its almost like ESPN does it as your contract comes up for renewal. TWC got it when they came up for renewal. Same with when ESPNU and ESPN Classic flipped spots on DirecTV, I believe that it was during contract extension negotiations. TWC and others had it in digital basic well before that time.

At that time Fox, who is a near 50% owner of the Big Ten Network, also owned DirecTV, so it was an inhouse transaction so to speak.
OK, one more question. I get ESPN3 at home by logging in to my school's VPN. Will this affect universities since they all provide ESPN3 for free on campus?
