Very good defensive coach. Has not been a good offensive coach or a good recruiter. Recruiting has been better the past couple of years, and evidently that has been due to hiring assistant coaches who can recruit, and who can find guys who can score, and recognize that winning championships takes both offense and defense. His style of offense has improved quite a bit the past couple of years, and the teams have been much more enjoyable to watch. For some reason, he just can't get the interest up for our program, and hasn't been successful in putting butts in the seats.
A friend of mine, an old player and coach, mentioned to me this morning, that Steve needs to find someone that will bring out the fans. Someone who can score 20 points a game or more, and feature that player. I believe Steve missed big time with Matt. He could have been a Rotnei Clarke, scoring wise, at this level, had they fed him the ball, and had he played a lot more minutes. Just look at his minutes played and what he accomplished in those minutes. And his defense improved greatly over the years he was here. Some might disagree, but Matt was our best chance to create a player who could score and that would be embraced by the fans, and have created new fans. But there were other issues not related to on course performance that Steve had to take into consideration. Jealousy by certain players who didn't want Matt to be the star. With that said, I believe Steve is a very good, fundamentally sound coach, and his teams always play hard and compete. He has certainly had a steady, if not spectacular career as our coach, and you couldn't ask for a nicer person off the court. And I believe he has started to create a program that can move up a notch on the basketball spectrum.
