There is a media day for every single team at every single school every single year. You're aware of this right? The only thing different about this year for these sports is location.

Reed Hayes is much bigger news, and should be, than this. Science Hill FOOTBALL is much bigger news than this. It's FOOTBALL SEASON and ETSU is trying to push soccer and volleyball. No problem feeding the students and getting together for some fun prior to their seasons (wish them all the very best). But to call this a FALL SPORTS media day at your local NCAA Division I regional university is beyond embarrassing when it can't even compete on the same seasonal sports level as the local high school.
IF ETSU football was back, it couldnt compete with Science Hill football

This attitude is why ETSU athletics is sitting where it is today. This is part of a culture that must change or athletics will be 100 percent funded by students.
I dont endorse that attitude. In fact, im for athletics being little league type all the way to 12th grade, so that public education can focus on education. The public's support for high school athletics is amazing to me.

But I am stating a fact. The average JC resident has a bigger connection to Science Hill athletics than ETSU.

It is because the previous president and current athletic director have given them absolutely nothing to connect with. They effectively took away the fall semester from fans, students, alumni and community. I believe Dr. Noland is well aware of this and will change it. First, the University has to act like it cares then the community can back that effort.
My brother makes a living off school fundraising for athletics. They're not getting that much anymore except for schools near casinos. (See Franklin, Cherokee, Swain Co.) High schools now are funded by donations/fundraisers, selling squares on the football field at 100 dollars a square to see where the cow takes a dump, draw downs, you name it, schools are doing it to make ends meet.
Interscholastic athletics has as much to do with educating children as the books do, or maybe we shouldn't worry about interpersonal skills, teambuilding, overcoming adversity, learning self-reliance, self-control, self-worth, multi-tasking and taking responsibility for your actions.
And a successful Division I football program will garner more attention than a high school.
Also, you say you want it to be little league-esque? Basketball is to some degree, we have the slimeballs we know as AAU ball. Yep, that's a great way to educate kids.
You didn't participate in high school sports did you? Or band...
Sports yes but not at high school level. Band, hell no. That should be obvious from previous comments about how annoying they are.

AAU is bad simply because it is all the prep kids. If all basketball was done this way, it wouldn't be so bad. Every county have a team or two, etc. Do this for all sports. Now, not as many people would make the teams as there would probably be a bit fewer teams. But that is much more preparing for real life- not everyone makes the team.

Geez, we really need some basketball games to get here fast so we can have a legit disscussion about something ETSU related.
AAU sports are bad because of the slimeball coaches/runners hooking kids up with agents at age 13. It's as corrupt, if not more than overseas soccer.
School teams if nothing more keep the crime rates down, that's been proven time and time again. And not everybody makes the team, hell my senior year of high school for 12 spots on a BAD TEAM with a worse coach we had 40 boys come out, just for varsity. Not everyone made the team, nor did they in baseball in which we were actually good at.
Plus, you'll never win with me or the majority on music in schools. The level of education the kids get in marching band is unrivaled. I hated Scott Lambert, but I look at the man today and think damn, he went from Battle to the University of South Carolina. Most of his former students are highly successful today, because of what he instilled in them.
We'll always disagree about that, but related to ETSU I'll say this much, it was an idea to get regular folks out and give them access to the players/coaches and ask questions, which isn't always a bad thing. The flipside is it looks like a desperate attempt at getting some attention for sports nobody gives a $#!t about.

If the value of sports in a school is an education, then I don't understand why you wouldn't support all sports equally, rather than place special emphasis on football. It also boggles my mind that you're not a big fan of a soccer team, but you advocate for the band. I simply can't wrap my head around that.

Because there is absolutely no comparison in popularity of football versus soccer. Football is the great American sport and is number one especially in the South and especially in Tennessee. If you drove around East Tennessee last Friday night and went by the high schools you would have seen stadiums brightly lit and packed with people supporting football not soccer. Come the week of September 1st we will get to see every state university in Tennessee that did not make the tennis coach athletic director kicking of their football seasons. And every single school will be drawing thousands more people than will every watch a soccer match. Hopefully this is the last year of this utter embarrassment for ETSU.

You missed my point. Lover said that the value of sports to an educational institution was in the education the athletes receive in the process of participating in the sport. My question was why then would all sports not be equal when affiliated with an institution of learning, since that is their value. If this is the purpose, popularity is irrelevant.
What I've seen from the mentality of soccer is the "everyone makes the team" that etsubuc loathes. I can tell you, my experiences with marching bands are not everyone marches, and not everyone plays in concert band. Dude I'm telling you, and folks may laugh, but I can truthfully say I was more afraid of Scott Lambert than I ever was guys like Billy Leeson, Sam Blevins and even the great Jimmy King at Holston. He was more of a disciplinarian, and demanded the absolute best out of everyone he had, and he got it, too.
And I don't want soccer to lose at ETSU, hell for what they're paying for it they need to win, and win alot. But I don't believe that sports that can't bring any community interest nor ever have the potential to move the needle should be funded at the level ETSU is. It's the age old argument, we're always gonna disagree on it, and while I don't think you mortgage the university for football, I do think you fund it, and show it a little more attention because a football program can control the entire culture of a campus, good or bad...
ETSU does something, we complain. ETSU doesn't do something, we complain. Maybe not the same ones, but probably about the same number of us. What ETSU should or should not do is perfectly obvious - depending who you talk to. Folks, whatever you think, there's another side - maybe even a legitimate one.
I've got a complaint. Beach volleyball is an official A-Sun sport and ETSU is too cheap to field a team! Could you imagine the ticket revenues via all of the area high school boys in E.T. (let alone the "old guys" like us)?
