I was looking at the past participants of the MAC Championship game and have come to the conclusion that if you make it this far, there is a very HIGH likely-hood that your coach will be gone the next year.

2003 #13 Miami 49 #20 Bowling Green 27
2004 Miami 27 Toledo 35
2005 Akron 31 Northern Illinois 30
2006 Ohio 10 Central Michigan 31
2007 Miami 10 Central Michigan 35
2008 Buffalo 42 #12 Ball State 24
2009 Ohio 10 Central Michigan 20
2010 Miami 26 #24 Northern Illinois 21
2011 Ohio 20 Northern Illinois 23

2003 - Miami Coach Hoeppner leaves for Indiana, BG coach Urban Meyer leaves for Utah (now Ohio State)
2004 - N/A
2005 - N/A
2006 - Central Michigan Coach Brian Kelly leaves for Cincinnati (now Notre Dame)
2007 - N/A
2008 - Ball State Coach Brady Hoke leaves for San Diego (now Michigan), Buffalo Coach Turner Gill leaves for Kansas
2009 - Central Michigan Coach Butch Jones leaves for Cincinnati
2010 - Miami Coach Mike Haywood leaves for Pitt, Northern Illinois Coach Jerry Kill leaves for Minnesota

We've had some great coaches in the MAC, we just need to be able to keep them around. Its a feedback loop - win your division, lose your coach, start back at square 1. Ohio Bobcats are very fortunate to have an older coach whom either nobody wants to hire (an older coach) or is happy with the reduced pressure of the MAC as opposed to Nebraska. Every other team on the above list went through some dark times right after they were in the MACC (Miami after 2003, BG, CMU now after Jones, Ball after Hoke, Buffalo after Gill).

If we up the minimum buyouts so that they are always $1 mil+, the coaches will either stay, or the Big Ten can pay us a million dollar training fee for each new coach we deliver to them...

As in the case with Jerry Kill, we will have a strict NO RETURNS policy 03-wink

If you raise the buyout, the coach will want something in return, like a higher base salary.
Gill left ub after 2009
Make sure you don't lose a good QB too.

2003 - Roethlisberger's last year. Josh Harris's last year,
2008 - Nate Davis's last year
2009 - Dan Lefevour's last year
Wasn't Gregg Brandon the BG coach in 2003?
I know we just suffered from this problem when NIU snatched away our assistant women's golf coach to be their head coach. You just can't keep coaches when a juggernaut wants them.

yes, Meyer was coach the prior two years. 8-3 and 9-3, no bowls and no MACC. Brandon won two bowls the two years following Meyer.
Going the older coach route like Ohio is doing in the MAC is a good one.

Terry Bowden is another Solich for the MAC. He walks into a perfect situation, a program with no expectations. If Terry can win 5-6 games in UA a few years that will be considered a success and give him the time to build up the depth like Solich.

A decade ago, MAC schools were paying their HC's 100k while the BCS schools were in the 500k-1 million range. Ohio lost Grobe for 550k to Wake Forest. Ohio has Solich in the neighborhood of 800k with incentives but the entry level salary in the BCS is now 2 million a year!

There is no way the MAC can catch up to the Big 6 conferences in salaries now that they've signed 15-20 million a year per school TV contracts. The MAC just can't compete with that.
