Guess it wasn't as much of a political witchhunt as first thought. There was at least probablc cause the company purchased prohibited timber.

Unfortunate, but won't prevent me from buying another Gibby...
Do you have any other choice than to settle with the Feds?

Either settle or go broke trying to beat them. No different than extortion.
Gibson has acknowledged that it failed to act on information

That's a bit vague, but I guess they cut (no pun) their losses.

x2 on this. Sometimes settling isn't an admission of guilt. You have to do a cost benefit analysis and see where you stand and if it's not in your favor it's the smart choice.

So if the company was using elephant ivory in their guitars, you are going to call those laws stupid too?

How about respect the laws of other countries?

03-phew
if the government wanted to "stick it to"/extort Gibson, then the penalty would have been larger than 300k. Gibson broke the law and got its hand slapped. It happens.
India stated that Gibson never broke any of their laws, the Feds used their own interpretation of India's laws to inforce the Lacy Act. It's insane.
