Can they get there with the current roster? Maybe they pick up a utility player before Tuesday but to make a real difference, I think they need a front line starter? Shields would be huge.
Let's GO BRAVES!
They need a starter. Don't think Sheets is the answer, but he could be a complementary piece down the stretch.
I don't see them overpaying for a rental and agree with that decision if that is what it comes down to.
Go Reds!
Yeah, because 3-0 and dominating is bad. Who needs a 0.50 ERA?!!

When their SS comes back, they will be much better in the infield. I do agree that another SP would be a good thing.

As long as Washington doesn't make a major move, they are fine until they get to NLDS, or NLCS. They are not going to be an easy out for anyone. Loved that just a couple weeks ago people were talking about how they were done and their mgr was horrible.
Dempster shouldnt have blocked the trade and would have been a better fit in Atlanta than Texas. He's gonna find out that pitching in the AL is a whole different world than the NL. He couldnt get thru 5 last night and allowed more runs (8) than he did in his last 7 starts combined.
What Frank Wren does is remarkable considering the budget he has to work with. He doesn't always go out and make a "big deal" just to make a big deal. Since last deadline he's added Bourn (one of the best leadoff men in the game), and several other pieces (Durbin, Francisco, Janish) who each improve this Braves team in a different way. They may not have a Strasburg, or Kershaw or Halladay, but they have a very solid starting rotation. Dealing Delgado for 2 months of Dempster would've been a huge mistake IMO. The Braves were able to add starting pitching depth, and get a pitcher whose been on some lousy teams (Cubs, Pirates) in Maholm who I believe can help them just as much as Dempster. Also got Reed Johnson who is a better version of Matt Diaz. When Andrelton Simmons comes back (if they can just keep it within 3 games) I have a feelin the Nats will choke. I'll be in San Francisco in 3 weeks to catch the Braves and Giants by the bay (PS. If anyone knows Dan Uggla, and can hook me up with meeting him that would be cool, lol)

I was lucky enough to go see the Braves this past month when Ben Sheets made his return. Bringing him in mid-season will turn out to be an ingenious move. I think that really helps soften the blow of not picking up Dempster or Greinke.
The Nats have alreads said that Strasburg is getting shut down after 160 innings and he already has more than 120. While I am very impressed at their team and what they are doing... I think the Braves take the East this season. How far they go, that's another matter.

I agree with you; they can win the East. They only have about 15 games left against teams with winning records. Of course, with that, comes the need to sweep teams like Houston, not losing 3-2 like they did Saturday night. Made up for it yesterday, though. Saw a crazy stat on the AJC beat writer's twitter: Braves are 20-4 in Medlen's last 24 starts.
