CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION: 100 Years Of Basketball

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - From Millhiser Gymnasium and Richmond Arena to the Robins Center and Sweet 16's, 100 years of Spider Basketball will come to life during a season-long celebration in 2012-13.

The Spiders, who began playing men's basketball in the 1913-14 season, have enjoyed national success and will put that tradition on display with festivities marking the 100th Anniversary of Spider Basketball.

A 100 Years of Spider Basketball logo has been unveiled to tip-off the season-long trip down memory lane. The logo will be prominently displayed including on the Spiders' uniforms, painted on the Robins Center court and raised to the arena's rafters.

Men's Basketball Announces 2012-13 Schedule

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond will play city-rival VCU home and away on national television and visit Kansas and Minnesota in the 2012-13 season, the 100th season of Spider basketball.

The Spiders will play nine games against 2012 NCAA Tournament teams, including four that advanced to the Sweet 16. Four of the games against 2011 NCAA Tournament teams will be in the Robins Center (Davidson, Saint Louis, VCU and Xavier).

Richmond is still looking for one game to round out a 31-game regular season schedule.

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond men's basketball team will play all of its weekday home games at 7 p.m. and all of its weekend home games at 6 p.m. in the 2012-13 season.

The Spiders play 17 home games in the Robins Center this winter as they celebrate the 100 Years of Richmond Basketball.

Richmond's home schedule includes the tipoff to the 100 Years Celebration on Nov. 9th against Liberty. The Spiders host long-time rivals William & Mary, Davidson and Wake Forest, along with city-rival and new Atlantic 10 member VCU.

The Spiders also host 2012 NCAA Tournament teams Xavier, Saint Louis and St. Bonaventure on consecutive Saturdays in February.

Robins Tribute Highlights Basketball's Opening Night

Two games for $1, selected concession items for $1, t-shirt and poster giveaways, retro uniforms worn by the men's team, autographs and a special halftime ceremony honoring one of the greatest moments in Richmond basketball history will tipoff the season-long celebration of 100 Years of Spider Basketball Friday at the Robins Center.

The women's team christens the season with a 4 p.m. game against Longwood. The men's team hosts Liberty at 7 p.m. All tickets for the doubleheader are just $1, with selected concession stand favorites also offered for only $1. Friday night's season opener is also a Kids Club game, with members receiving free admission.

In honor of 100 Years of Spider Basketball, the men's team will debut retro uniforms, to be worn at selected home games this season. The uniforms are virtually identical to those worn in the mid 1980's when Richmond was making its first NCAA appearances. The uniforms include the memorable barber shop pole red, white and blue piping down the sides. A retro-style 100 Years t-shirt and commemorative 100 Years poster will be given away to the first 2,500 fans.

At halftime of the men's game, a special ceremony will recognize the unprecedented support of Richmond Athletics from the Robins Family, while honoring E. Claiborne Robins, Jr., the visionary and driving force behind the Robins Center, which opened 40 years ago.

Curtis Blair 1988-92 - Seventh all-time scorer (1,630 points); UR Hall of Fame; CAA Player of Year (1992); 2-time 1st Team All CAA; 3-time All-CAA Tournament Team; 2-time All-CAA Defensive Team; member of '91 NCAA Team first No. 15 seed to defeat No. 2 (Syracuse); 2nd round NBA Draft pick Houston Rockets; NBA official.

Tony Dobbins 2001-04 - 1,026 points; only 2-time and back-to-back Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year (2003, 04); hit game-winning shot in victory at 12th-ranked Kansas 2004.

David Gonzalvez 2006-10 - Fifth all-time scorer (1,727 points); Atlantic 10 All-Defensive Team (2010); ESPN National Player of the Week (2010); as a senior helped lead Spiders to first national ranking in 25 years and NCAA at-large bid.

Justin Harper 2007-11 - 1,457 points; 1st team All Atlantic 10 and A-10 All-Tournament Team (2011); 32nd pick in 2011 NBA draft pick by Cleveland; member of 2 NCAA Tournaments teams and final Top-25 rankings; 2011 Atlantic 10 Championship and Sweet 16.
