Just asking.

Consider that the BCS and AQ status will no longer exist come 2014.

So if this is the case do we really need Boise and San Diego?

Boise was a must for the Big East when BCS abd AQ status were part of the formula, but not now so what does Boise bring now but a long trip to the Idaho? Are we really prepared to pay the Big West an annual tribute for Boise or to add Boise for all sports? Is it worth the economic cost?

San Diego does supposely add TV market, but the truth is it has only a very small share of that market place. San Diego after all was a brain fart thought up by John Marinatto as an appeasement to get Boise in the Big East.

So come 2014, it appears this could be the 11 team Big East football:

UConn
Rutgers
Temple
Navy
Cincinnati
Louisville
Memphis
Central Florida
South Florida
Houston
SMU

So who is the 12th team? East Carolina or Southern Miss?

No offense to San Diego or Boise but it appears the complete concept of adding them is changing even as I write this. The silence of the Big East presidents speaks volumes. I bet the 12/20 concept could re-appear with Navy and the 12th team getting all-sports invites. I think San Diego or Boise or just to far out of the conference foot-print. And this is why Boise is having second thoughts.
Pass on southern miss
If that did happen ECU would be the pick up
Invite 3 to go to 14. ECU, USM and Tulsa. If you do that you essentially destroy CUSA and the leftovers are picked apart by the MWC and the rest merge with Sunbelt. Just my thoughts.

West: SMU, Houston, Tulsa, Memphis, USM, UL, UC
East: UCF, USF, ECU, Navy, Temple, Rutgers, UConn

Edit: No offense to anybody trolling from CUSA. I want out of that nightmare.
I agree with every word you said Wilkie. So. Miss & ECU have great football fans and despite lack of market they pack their stadiums. The market comes along with winning for any team and Im all in favor of a much more geographic friendly Big East. Its not like we would see a big differance in the amount of money with or without Boise St. The full members of the Big East will see around 10 million per school.
Perhaps you forgot to read the article that future monetary distribution will likely be based on past BCS performance. So yes, Boise is still needed.
Stay at 10 in 2013 and 2014. Invite UMass in 2015 when Navy comes aboard.
You know that may not be used. The Presidents still have to iron that out. The distribution will be for 5 or 6 that are well fed and then token amount for the rest. Wait and see.

The problem is CUSA wouldnt be the closest competitor to the Big East you describe---the Mountain West would be. They would have Boise, SDSU, Fresno, Nevada, Hawaii, and Air Force. They would have 3 state flagship schools and arguably the biggest football name outside of the Top-5 leagues. Plus---BYU could end up joining that conference. They would be a very formidible football confernece at that point.

The MW downside would be the same as it always has been---too many small markets and empty states to generate a significant TV contract.

Ive said it before---I think the last hope for the stronger mid-majors is a nationwide league consisting of 14-18 of the strongest remaining non-Top5 programs. A league like that would provide a decent strength of schedule and its winner would be strong enough to be threaten to crack into the national championship race. I think a "Big Majors" league could land a strong TV contract and could be a relatively decent landing spot for the best of the mid-majors. The Big East is trying to be that league---but who knows how it all turns out. If it ends with the strongest mid majors split up into 3 or 4 different regional conferences with a bunch of bottom feeders---well---the mid-majors will cease to be a real factor in big time football. Its really that simple.
These would be my divisions

To be named Division
UConn
Rutgers
Temple
Navy
East Carolina
Central Florida
Providence
St. Johns
Seton Hall
Villanova

To be named Division
Cincinnati
Louisville
Memphis
South Florida
Houston
SMU
Marquette
Depaul
Notre Dame
Georgetown

Doesn't the current UMass stadium expansion take it from 18,000 to 25,000? That is insufficient for the Big East.
The best way for the Big East to be taken seriously is this:

EAST

UConn
Rutgers
Temple
Cincinnati
Louisville
USF
UCF
Memphis

WEST

Houston
SMU
Boise
BYU
Air Force
Navy
Fresno
SDSU

We should work toward this and do anything to make it happen. If it becomes impossible, and we fall short, then we look at "Plan B" (other options).

They are already playing most of their games at Gillette Stadium so it isn't out of the question.

I don't neccessarily disagree. The problem is that it's been proven almost impossible to create that league under the Big East umbrella. It just doesn't work with all the non-FB members. It gets too bloated and fractured as this has been proven when there were only 8 football members. That "best of the rest" has to be something completely new.

Both MWC and CUSA have their bottom feeders that DESTROY any chance of building a respectable SOS.

My best of the rest.....I'm of the opinion good football eventually over rides markets.

West: Boise, SDSU, BYU, AFA, Fresno, Houston, Tulsa, SMU, UNLV (for hoops)
East: USF, UCF, USM, UL, UC, Temple, ECU, Navy, Memphis (for hoops)

FWIW I think Uconn & Rutgers eventually end up in ACC or Big 10.

Of course this takes some out of the box thinking, cooperation and a willingness to break away from the Catholic schools.
I thought 'Ville was B12 bound? Why do they care?

Wasn't the whole point of being AQ to be part of the major revenue stream? Where's the new info on how money will be distributed moving forward? Everything I've seen regarding that says Boise State is more valuable than anybody currently in the Big East. 03-2thumbsup

I hope we are, but until its official, I will care about the Big East. And if fortune smiles on us, I will still care about the Big East teams.
The minute Boise State stops winning the become liability; however, Boise State hasn't stopped winning over the last ten years so I'll take my chances with them.

Former C-USA schools know that Southern Miss is pretty darn good in football and plays a difficult schedule each season. ECU is way to up and down but could be really good with the right coach and the right conference. UMass is a gical add for 2015 or later because they need to grow the program. Marshall is a sleeper that won big in the MAC and fits the geography of the Big East.

What it comes down to what is best for the current Big East schools to make money under a new tv deal and bcs system. I have always had mixed feeling about the western expansion model but if the money is there go for it.

Part of me wants to see the Big East raid the A-10 one more time to bring in Butler and Dayton (Sorry Xavier). Dump the western schools and add ECU, Southern Miss, and Umass.
The mere fact the Wilkie is proposing future Big East divisions which include Louisville is a 180 degree turn from his posts a month or two ago about joining the Big 12 any day.
