Here's the new A-Sun championship schedule for the upcoming year. Except for very few changes, it's not a whole lot different from last season.

My comments:

1. Volleyball at Lipscomb? That's one program that definitely does not need a home court advantage.

2. Basketball at Mercer again...and again...and again...and again...for ever and ever, Amen.

3. Sand Volleyball: I wish we had sand volleyball. That would be sweet.

4. Lacrosse: Hmmm . . . I don't know, really . . . it's Longwood's, Detroit's, and Howard's only sport in the A-Sun.

5. OT&F at North Florida: That makes very good sense. They seat 9,000+ for track & field.

6. Baseball at Stetson: Again? Seriously? Why not here? We might actually have a completed stadium by then.

7. IT&F at ETSU: It's always here...as it should be. It's a lot of fun and a good use of the Dome.

8. Tennis at ETSU: That's cool; but, I wonder what AD demanded that?

9. Softball at Lipscomb: I probably shouldn't rant about this, but I will. What a trashy dump of a so-called stadium! It's repulsive. You feel like showering after sitting there through a double-header. I couldn't imagine the feeling after a tourny. I get the "Bison Purple & Gold shakes" just thinking about it. With this (and Volleyball, FTM) site selection, would it surprise anyone to know that Philip Hutcheson chairs this year's A-Sun Tournament Committee? If BU was still in the A-Sun, that would be the place to play. They have a great stadium with a nice view of the Ryman Auditorium beyond center field. Since they're out, it really should be played here. Our stadium totally blows away Lipscomb's.

10. Men's Soccer: Yep, I'm calling it: we'll host it again. This year we'll win it. Go Bucs!

Yep, this is what we're spending $12 mil a year on - about as exciting as watching grass grow.

All of the schools in the ASun have the opportunity to bid on a conference tournament (with some exceptions like indoor T&F. We are the only school with a facility that can host the event). It is pretty much a certainty that the host school will lose money, so the schools that put together bid packages are usually schools that feel they have a good chance to win the tournament and think the home court/field edge will help make that happen. Some of the championships are also awarded for two years at a time I believe as well. The ASun is usually going to award the championship site to the school that puts together the most lucrative bid for the conference.

Look at the host schools. Volleyball - Lipscomb has won three straight titles. With Belmont gone it's likely they win again. They host. Stetson is always near the top of the league in baseball. Same goes for us in tennis.

As far as ETSU hosting softball, it would really be pointless. We would lose money, use our staff to work the event, and watch other teams play. Yes, our facility is good enough, but our team isn't.

When we hosted the basketball tournament a few years back, I had heard that the A-Sun office was thrilled because ours was the first site to ever make any money. Unless I'm thinking wrong, I don't see how Mercer can make more money than ETSU did. Is Mercer perhaps the most central location for the whole conference? Maybe that's why they keep the tourny there going on its 5th year?
After we hosted it (basketball) for two years, im almost certain we made a bid to host it for another 2 years but were outbid. I have no idea if we continue to be outbid or whether they have decided to have it at Mercer for central location purposes. If we indeed lose money on it, we shouldnt bid on it.

If I were the conference, I would certainly want it going to somewhere that might have a chance to be in the finals, just to look better on TV with more than 200 people in the stands.
