Yes.

Can't think of one in the three major sports ( baseball, football and basketball), although we've had a number of great upsets in basketball (especially in the NCAA) and some marquee wins in football.

In the sports where fewer schools participate, ( hockey, soccer and golf come to mind) think Akron upset number one when they has their championship soccer year. (don't follow college soccer so I'm guessing at this.) Miami and BG have produced a few great hockey teams - wouldn't be surprised to know they took down a few.

Good question, though. This would be a great list.

In hockey Miami had been The ranked #1 team and of course has beaten #1 ranked teams as well.

RE: EMU baseball in 1976.

EMU finished as the RUNNER UP to national champ Arizona.

Did EMU beat the #1 in the tourney? Don't know.

Tough to know. We didn't have ESPN back then nor the Internet.

In the 1960's the Toledo basketball team defeated NYU at Madison Square Garden. One poll had NYU as number 1 and the other poll had NYU as number 2 in the country. The two polls then were UPI and AP. The Rockets were led by Larry Jones.

Pretty sure that Miami, BG and Western have all done it a time or two in hockey over the years.

In 1963-64 basketball season Bowling Green defeated Loyola of Chicago 92-75 when the Ramblers may have been #1 in a poll. Loyola defeated Cincinnati for the national championship.

UCLA won John Wooden's first NC in 1964.

Loyola won 1963 tournament.

WMU finished second in 1955 CWS.

First two CWS were held at WMU's Hyames Field in 1947-48. College Baseball HOF used to be at Western, too.

Western won NCAA D-I Cross Country national championship in both '64 and '65.

Loyola was undefeated, but ranked #2 at the time. The game was on February 16, 1963. Loyola won the NCAA title that year as previously mentioned.

Marquette wasn't #1 (but were highly ranked), but were defending national champs when Miami beat them in first round of NCAA's in 1978. To my knowledge, highest ranked football team that Miami ever beat was #8 LSU in 1986....also #10 Purdue in 1962 if you want to go back that far. No #1's, though.

I seem to remember that in the early 80's WMU beat top ranked DePaul - Ray Meyer's team that had Mark Aguirre.

I remember that game! Man, those Tiger fans were mad. USM beat Mississippi State that same day, and Ole Miss lost to Arkansas State. Not a good day for the SEC West!

Back in those days all things relative the MAC basketball was more on the level of what we think today of the MWC or the MVC.

In the 60's and 70's there was no Big East or A-10 so it was not uncommon for MAC schools to regularly sign high major players. The MAC much more regularly put up a nice performance in the NCAAs also.

Western beat Aguirre, Ray Meyer, and DePaul in 1979. According to our web site Blue Demons were not ranked. That might be wrong though as DePaul finished 26-6.

WMU also defeated a #5 DePaul team in December 1984 during Joey Meyer's first year, long after Aguirre left for NBA.

Not true. Back then only 25 (later 32) teams made the tourney. MAC teams often met a major independent such as Marquette, Dayton, or Notre Dame, or Louisville which was in MVC at the time, in first round.

It was rare for a MAC team to win a NCAA tournament game. During that era Ohio U. was the only school to win two games (beat Louisville and Kentucky, lost to Cazzie Russell and Michigan) in '64.

That 1979 game was not it, as this happened while I was living in Colorado and I moved in 1980. I remember dozing with Sportscenter on and heard them say #1 ranked DePaul lost at Western Michigan and thought, this is a sweet dream. Opened my eyes and found out that it was true and watched the show repeat later. The WMU website shows that in 1984-85 we beat them by 1 but says they were ranked #5. Perhaps that was their final ranking.

By virtue of having an automatic bid to the round of 24 or 32 and with a far smaller amount of D1 schools to compete in recruiting against the MAC had more stature as a basketball conference nationally back in those days.

The Midwest was still growing rapidly in the 60s......the B1G only had 10 teams and the ACC had 7 so not as many roster spots available in premier basketball leagues.

Again I wouldn't say the league was tremendously better back then but at least where the MAC was in the 90s when talent like Wally and Gary graced the court.
