College baseball is no different from the pros in that speed and power are abundant; defense and pitching are scarce. (Supply and demand does not work here because of the show business factor: the final object is making money.) A smart MLB team drafts pitchers, catchers and shortstops - you can always pick up the others. The problem in college is that you have no draft rights, so even the "best pitcher still available" is not guaranteed to you.
Angels player development guru was asked at the Hot Stove if he prefers drafting high school guys vs college guys. His response was surprising to me: high school guys; they have more time to develop young talent.
I wonder to what extent really good pitching is development vs. natural talent. Have to have an arm, but a lot of old guys have done well in the majors, and it wasn't because they still had the best arms. I would love to hear an informed source talk about that.
