He shouldnt have done that to the kids. They shouldve gotten some kind of heads up. Even if you call them at 2 in the morning. They shouldnt have to hear it on ESPN, Im sorry thats a little classless.

Let’s see – you lost some respect. Would that be because he is a lying, cheating, back stabbing, ungrateful POS? I figure that anyone who would walk out on their alma mater after one year when they had given him his first chance to become a head coach, walk out of the X job that he stated way back “was his dream job

If I remember right when he left Butler he told the A.D. there he would only leave for his "dream job" at a big ten school like Illinois, OSU and Purdue I recall.
I feel for Xavier, how respected is the new head coach.
I hope OSU is happy with the Basketball version of Franchione.
What a loser.
04-cheers

Matta could have killed somebody with his reckless driving:

Matta ready to lead Buckeyes
By Doug Harris
Dayton Daily News

COLUMBUS | The first person to hear that Thad Matta had accepted the Ohio State head basketball coaching job Wednesday wasn't his wife, his top assistant, OSU Athletics Director Andy Geiger or anyone in the Xavier community that had been kept in suspense for more than a week.

Matta was racing home after receiving an offer from the Buckeyes when he was pulled over in Cincinnati for doing 58 in a 40-mph zone.

Asked why he was in such a rush, Matta told the officer he was agonizing over a job change.

When the cop pointed out that she had attended OSU, Matta saw his opening to avoid a ticket.

"I said, I just took the job (there),' " Matta recalled. "And she goes, 'Have a great day.' "

Matta can find the right words to win over anyone connected with OSU, it seems.

The 36-year-old coach was on the Buckeyes' short list of candidates from the beginning, and he wowed school administrators in subsequent interviews.

"I have to tell you we were extraordinarily impressed when we met coach Matta," OSU President Karen Holbrook said during a packed news conference Friday. "We liked what he said. We liked the way he said it."

Matta, who has a 102-31 career record, is one of only six coaches to win 100 games in his first four years.

"What set him apart was his energy level," said former OSU All-American Bill Hosket, who served on the search committee. "You can tell what a competitor he is and how much confidence he has.

"He not only has won games — he's won championships. He gets teams across the finish line."

Geiger was impressed that Matta kept a mission statement and life goals in a bound notebook. It reminded the AD of winsome football coach Jim Tressel, who attended the news conference.

"We started on our first day looking for the right characteristics for the ideal coach," Geiger said. He mentioned integrity, ideals and a passion for the game. "We certainly have somebody with those characteristics."

But Matta's virtues haven't always been on display.

A day after meeting with Geiger, Matta told the Cincinnati Enquirer that he wasn't a candidate for the position and said nobody from OSU had contacted him.

When asked about his misleading statement, Matta offered no apology.

"I don't know the exact days," he said, "but when you go through this process, there's a lot of times where you change your mind. You don't know for sure what you're going to do. You don't know if you're going to be offered the job. . . . I did not want to ever demean the program that we built (at Xavier). Next question."

Matta agreed to a seven-year deal and a starting salary of $760,000. OSU also will begin making payments this year on the $2 million that Matta can earn by staying for the length of the contract.

The pact includes a $300,000 signing bonus and numerous incentives, but Geiger said Matta is paying $225,000 to meet the buyout clause in his Xavier contract.

Hosket once was viewed as a proponent for hiring coaching legend Bob Knight. But the Dayton native said the idea didn't get much traction.

"Andy came to the (first) meeting and said we needed a long-term solution," Hosket said. "If you look at what Bob has meant to college basketball and his number of wins, he's the best. But the reality is he's 63 years old, and we didn't want to go through this process again in another four or five years."

OSU guard Tony Stockman — who had frequent run-ins with Matta's predecessor, the fired Jim O'Brien — welcomed the new regime.

"I really loved coach O'Brien," Stockman said. "But this is a new start. I think all the guys feel that way."

Although the NCAA is investigating allegations that led to O'Brien's firing, Matta is eager to get started.

"I'm fully aware of the state that this program's in right now," he said. "I've accepted this position for one reason and one reason only, and that is to bring Ohio State basketball back into national prominence."
