I just started listening to Dantonio on WLW.
How disappointing that Gamble is doing the interview.
85, I'm out of town, AND I cannot stream from work. Can you please summarize? Thanks.
Nothing too new in the first half hour of the show. Like how he's emphasizing their toughness as a difference maker.
Oh, and Gamble is actually doing a good job with the interview. Said his dad has had UC football season tickets since 1959. He's much better informed than Furball, and not as dubious about the program as Skinner usually comes across.
I like Gamble.I think he's hilarious on the 2 Angry Guys, and he doesn't annoy me the way Skinner does!
Thanks for the responses, guys...

Thus, I ascertain, nothing enlightening considering Dantonio or UC football?

They never really got around too much to talking about personnel, other than some general comments about Gino.

Only two calls taken -- one asked about the receivers, and the other asked about what role the incoming freshman Harokai Nakamura might play.

Still, it's good to hear anything about UC football, and Dantonio's easygoing style and light humor is appealing to listen to.
BJ,
I left my office right after posting, so I couldn't do play by play.
First, I won't dispute that Gamble may be more knowledgable than Furball, but I find him excruciating to listen to. He leaps from thought to thought within one long sentence that he never finishes. It's one thing to just ramble and rant on Sunday morning sports talk, but when interviewing someone, you're supposed to ask a question, and let the person tell their story; especially a well-spoken guy like Dantonio.

What I can remember coach getting a chance to say -

- going to try and build fans, not just get people to come to a game. on Aug 22 (I think), they are going to go to Kings Island and sign autographs and meet people.
- any time you have a QB that has experience, and is tough, and can make decisions, you have a chance to win. That's why he made the QB "live" in spring drills, because he needed to guage everyone on their toughness from ground zero. Gino showed his toughness. (in response to a five minute ramble by Gamble , essentially to try and ask if it was a big bonus to have a 3-year starter behind center.)
- the receivers were young last year, some because of JUCO, so this year should be more comfortable. Catching the ball is about confidence. To be champions, receivers have to make catches. If we get these kids to believe they can catch, then its easy. Going to continue to recruit into that position. (this was in response to a caller who said UC football seems to be all about the dropped pass, 2002 OSU game, and all last season.)
- talked about the amount of Ohio talent that exists, and how he wants to get our share. talked about getting to all the local high schools and establishing contact. "they might not want to send kids to UC, and we might not always want their kids, but we have a roll in developing better programs in the area and want to be a part of that."
- talked about our improved facilities allowing us to get in front of the BCS level kids.

That's about what I can remember, and I missed some of it.
Thanks for the summary, I didn't know about the show until it was too late. Does anybody know if there is going to be a regularly scheduled program?
Rumor has it that Darren Barnett (Princeton HS) who started for Michigan State last year at Cornerback as a sophomore is going to transfer to UC and play his final two years under his uncle Harlon Barnett...

They mentioned last night that the first Coaches show will be on Thurs., Sept. 2, but I don't remember what time. Probably 8:00pm
Good rundown. Thanks 85 :thumb:
I caught a little of Lance's show today and he commented on the difference between UC and Miami promotion wise. He said Hoepner and Miami were more proactive in their approach. Hoepner must have had a regular weekly time on Lance's show last year and he or a Miami rep called Lance about setting it up again this year. Lance said he has made the same offer to UC and Dantonio but hasn't had a a response.

I've never been satisfied with the promotion of the FB team. I thought this year might be different because there were some actual promotion and advertisement in the spring. Then nothing. I haven't seen nor heard a thing since.
Didn't Lance compare the UC program to Vanderbilt, Temple, Baylor and the other crap programs in the country? No disrespect to Lance, but why would you want to promote your program on a show that thinks that low of your program?

Good point, Cat's Claw. I guess it's between a rock and a hard place when the local media contiunually slams the school (football AND basketball), yet you have an opportunity to use this same media as a promotional vehicle.

However, my position is that any opportunity for promotion should be taken. After all, what with all the jabs the group at 700 takes, UC still broadcasts their games on that station, so why not promote the team on Homer, regardless whether or not Lance is taking jabs.

Either that or simply start using WGUC (is it still around). I know that station is pretty much po-UC any way you slice it :D Plus, we don't need to listen to classical music 24 hours a day anyhow 03-razz
WGUC is long gone, from what I understand they decided to have some fun and contact a space shuttle orbiting one night. NASA quickly jumped in, had the FCC revoke their license, and they have been off the air since. They took down the old radio tower on top of Swift Hall a few years ago when all of the "Main Street" project began.
I don't think Lance dislikes UC football. He is generally positive about all the local sports. He's not like the two angry guys who just seem to want to find reasons to rip UC up. I think in years past UC hasn't promoted its football team well, but I'm hoping to see that change. I think Dantonio wants to show that he can field a winning team before he starts to talk it up. Though did anyone catch the quotes in the paper about Miami?

Quote:"I'm not going to hide the fact that that's a huge game for us," he said of the Miami game.

"I'm going to come out and say that's a rival game and that's important. You can print that. And you can print that I'm looking forward to that. And you can print that everybody at the University of Cincinnati and its alumni need to take that game personally. That's personal. Print that, OK?"

Sounds like promotion to me. When did Lance compare UC to Temple? If he's on here, maybe he can explain.
WGUC is still around. UC doesn't run it anymore however.
I think the station MLB was referring to was a student-run station that was available on a low-power signal around campus. The name might have been WFIB, but it's been a while, so I might be wrong about that.

WGUC has been all-classical music for as long as I can recall, and is physically located in Channel 48's building down by Music Hall.
Socko is right, I thought BJ was referring to the student run station that is now gone...
