USF Adds Another QB Recruit

TAMPA - Monticello Jefferson County High's Carlton Hill, rated the nation's No. 9 senior quarterback, verbally committed to the University of South Florida on Monday, continuing the Bulls' run on commitments from high- profile quarterbacks.
Hill, the Bulls' No. 1 2005 recruiting target at quarterback, said he chose USF over Miami, LSU, Maryland and Purdue. The 6-foot-3, 212-pounder also had scholarship offers from Florida State, Florida, Auburn, Michigan State and North Carolina State.

``I admire USF's program, it's close to home and I have a pretty good chance of playing soon,'' Hill said. ``I like their team and that they're moving to the Big East [in 2005].

``I wanted to commit before the season started so I could enjoy my senior year. This takes a lot of pressure off me.''

As a junior, Hill threw for more than 1,600 yards with 21 touchdowns and only three interceptions. He rushed for 600 yards and 12 TDs. He was also the Class 1A 200-meter state champion.

As a sophomore at Tallahassee Rickards, he threw for 1,500 yards and nine TDs.

``The quarterback coach at Purdue, who used to be at Marshall when Byron Leftwich was there, said [Hill] is a combination of Leftwich and [Michael] Vick,`` Jefferson County coach Jeff Schaum told Rivals.com.

Hill is rated the state's second-best and nation's ninth-best QB prospect by TheInsiders.com.

The Bulls are now heavy with quarterbacks. Besides sophomore starter Pat Julmiste and freshman reserve Louis Gachette, USF added Auburn transfer Courtney Denson, a SuperPrep All- American who isn't eligible until 2005, and received commitments from Lake Gibson senior Matt Grothe and Hillsborough junior Jarred Fayson in the past month.

``That [the number of quarterbacks] is not a concern,'' Hill said. ``I'm ready to compete. I don't think I'll take any visits [to other schools]. I might visit to have fun, but I'm still headed to USF.''
Everyone in the Non BCS conferences seem to think the NBE will not be able to compete. With the BCS on the NBE side the new members as well as the existing one will always have a leg up on recruiting and the NBE members will have a deeper talent pool then the C-USA or MWC members. With the influx of talent like the new USF QB plus with Louisville getting the nations Top QB and USA Today HS player of the year in Brian Brohm the NBE will be just fine.

WVU will carry the league for a couple of years until the new members catch up but I am excited about this year in the next few years.
More news about the USF recruit....this quote is from sunshine preps

"This is absolutely HUGE for USF. 2 solid 2005 QB coming in with Grothe and Hill with Denson transferring in. This could be a top 12-15 national class this season for the Bulls."

Dang. I hope USF gets good, but not that good that fast.
Thanks,

The new BIG EAST is going to be one hell of a good league IMO. I really cant see any program that is not serious about football in the New BIG EAST. It is scary because some team will have to finish last in this competitive league. I truely feel that the BIG EAST will be very strong top to bottom in just a short few years.

So he's injury-prone? :D

Just kidding...great pick-up.

...and Maize...you're going to keep hearing the same stuff until the NBE shows it on the field. All of us over in CUSA hear it all the time (even from Louisville posters who take the time to "stoop" to our level). You (BE posters) think that the NBE will be just fine...us (CUSA posters) think the same think about our situation (in FB), but until we go out on the field and back up our boasts, we're going to catch flak.

Actually on the Football side I do think C-USA will still be the best Non BCS league with Marshall, USM, Memphis, Houston and UCF. It is on the basketball end is where the NC-USA takes a major hit.

Memphis is now the kingpin and the standard bearer of the NC-USA, it will just take time on the basketball side to build around Memphis and UAB.
It's good to see QB's finally figuring out that since we run the spread...WE THROW IT ALOT AND NEED QB's. If there is any position to recruit for the spread, its that one. Finally our offensive future looks a little brighter.
