Strassel: The President Has a List

Save Mr. Obama, who acknowledges no rules. This past week, one of his campaign websites posted an item entitled "Behind the curtain: A brief history of Romney's donors." In the post, the Obama campaign named and shamed eight private citizens who had donated to his opponent. Describing the givers as all having "less-than-reputable records," the post went on to make the extraordinary accusations that "quite a few" have also been "on the wrong side of the law" and profiting at "the expense of so many Americans."

"We don't tolerate presidents or people of high power to do these things," says Theodore Olson, the former U.S. solicitor general. "When you have the power of the presidency—the power of the IRS, the INS, the Justice Department, the DEA, the SEC—what you have effectively done is put these guys' names up on 'Wanted' posters in government offices." Mr. Olson knows these tactics,

That is the case. He's a product of the world that he lives in just like the rest of them. He's just as willing to step over the cheating line as the rest.

Hmm. Makes me wonder.
I don't know about you guys, but I keep hearing about liberal donors who are criminals and liberal politicians have to actually debate on whether to give the money back. Obama himself has been given money by drug dealers and gun smugglers only to return it when word leaked out. Who knows how much he kept because word didn't?

The presidential candidate who promised to be be so much different than all the rest is actually proving to be far, far worse than all the rest.

Actually he's proving himself to be along the same lines and exploiting precedent. So there is absolutely no change.

I disagree...If he had kept his big mouth shut I would, but he said he was going to change the office of the presidency. I have yet to see anything different. Unless you count the largest ego ever.

I sure as hell have. He's been acting more and more like a monarch the closer he gets to the end of his presidency.

Needless to say, that's very objective. I don't agree with the president a lot but if you're looking at ego Lyndon Johnson probably had the biggest. I don't know if you were just looking for something to say or what.

How so?
His very publicly expressed desire to find ways to circumvent congress when he doesn't get his way for one.

A real monarch either wouldn't have do that or would have no way to do it. Is he acting like a snake, yes, but not like a king. He's also not the first president to do so. Is it worse? Yes. Will it be even worse with the next guy? Yes.
What I gathered from this thread; people are surprised politicians are taking part in politics
and Obama's donors haven't been attacked publically by the right wingers?

I think it's great Obama is doing this. The identity of the billionaires giving to Romney (and other GOPers this cycle) and what they stand to gain by a Romney presidency--not only with tax cuts but with deregulation, lax regulatory enforcement, privatization and implicit bailout guarantees--is a very big deal, and it's an even bigger deal today with the repeal of Citizens United and these guys giving unlimited amounts to buy up all the airtime. It's not hard at all to see what these people would gain from a Romney presidency.

Predatory lender T. Martin Fiorentino Jr., "who raised $102,900 for Romney, lobbied against legislation regulating subprime lending on behalf of Lender Processing Services, a so-called “foreclosure mill’’ that was reprimanded in April by the government for “unsound practices related to residential mortgage loan serving and foreclosure processing.’’

David and Charles Koch among many other things tried to get the Keystone pipeline built through a large Nebraska aquifer that supplies drinking water for millions of people, and waged a full assault on Obama using all of their conservative media connections for not rubber stamping it. (Now it's been redirected around the aquifer)

Casino tycoon Sheldon Adelson runs a company that is under scrutiny from both the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission over bribery accusations in his casino outposts in Macao.

Steven Lund, the co-founder of Nu Skin, which became “direct selling” sponsor of the Romney-run 2002 Winter Olympics after having spent much of the nineties settling complaints over false advertising and other unscrupulous practices with the Federal Trade Commission and six different states’ attorneys general.

Harold Simmons greased Texas legislators to earn him the right to dump nuclear toxins wherever he damned well pleases--

http://www.motherjones.com/environment/2...waste-dump
Quote:State engineers and geologists strongly objected to licensing the the dump. Concerned that radioactive material could contaminate groundwater, three staffers at the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality resigned rather than sign off on the licenses. In a 2007 memo, four TCEQ engineers and geologists concluded that the site's proximity to the water table "makes groundwater intrusion into the disposal units highly likely" and suggested that it not be approved. One of the resigned staffers, an engineer named Encarnacion Serna, told the Texas Observer's Forrest Wilder that the site's geology made it unfit for storing nuclear waste. Nevertheless, he explained, "I started getting the idea that these people are going to license this thing no matter what. I felt that in clear conscience I couldn't grant a license with what was being proposed."

Home-construction tycoon Bob Perry leveraged millions in political contributions to influence the creation of a Texas Residential Construction Commission, a sham state “regulatory” agency that shielded shoddy home builders from lawsuits until the Texas legislature finally killed it in 2009.

Hedge-fund gambler John Paulson collaborated with Goldman Sachs on his megabet against the entire American housing industry before the crash.

And you have Frank Vandersloot, the founder of Melaleuca which like Nuskin is pyramid-like scheme selling products they claimed cure arthritis or treat clogged arteries, which have for decades had run ins with the FDA and several attorneys general.

I hope you are ready to bite your tongue if/when it happens to Obama's donors... and if you can't keep silent, I hope you avoid run-on sentences like this one.

I also laugh at your "conservative media" comments.
