Watching Forrest Gump on TV now and saw the scene where Jennie is singing and playing guitar in what looks to be a cabaret/strip joint. Got me curious...Is this referencing a particular place in Memphis, or just a general reference to those types of places at that time?

Types of places
When I left the theater that night I thought that was probably the best movie I had ever seen.
Danny's.

I once had a temporary roommate who was kind of new in town. He was looking for any DJ gig he could get and ended up working at one of the gentleman's clubs. He started bringing home this woman in the wee hours of the morning and one day she introduced herself to me.

Later I explained to him who she was, who her husband (or ex) was, what he was in prison for and that he better get as far away from her as he could.

He is still alive, last I heard.
I worked with Danny's sister at Bennigan's in the early 80's. She was a moose.

I'm apparently too young to understand what you're talking about, but it sounds like a fantastic story. Please explain, or tell me who to google.
Danny Owens I assume.

One article says he gets out in June 2016. I thought he was gone for good. TIPWAL?

Wouldn't that be funny.
The Pink Garter, next to Danny's, was the best of the two. Danny owned both. I have enough stories about those places, and the girls, to write a book. That was a favorite part of my life that I will never forget.

Danny Owens owned the most notorious strip club in town until he was convicted on RICO charges.

Quote:Danny Owens

There was a time when you couldn't pick up a newspaper or turn on the television without hearing something about Danny Owens, the king of Memphis strip clubs. But Danny's Angels is no more, and two years ago the property that once housed the infamous Stud's Playhouse was sold at auction, along with two of Owens' residences. In 1995, Owens, who once waltzed into a competitor's business with a baseball bat and began swinging, was convicted on gambling- and prostitution-related charges, fined $500,000, and sentenced to 27 years and three months in jail.

Today the 52-year-old Owens is getting plenty of rest at a federal prison in Lompoc, California. Interviews with Owens have to be cleared through the prison's administration. Calls to prison officials were not returned by press time. Owens is scheduled for release in June 2016. -- Chris Davis
