In addition to reports of Larry Brown being back in mix for #SMU job, so is South Florida's Stan Heath, who has interviewed.

Both would be great gets. What is the deal with Heath and USF? Any friction in that relationship?

Is she capable of breaking anything she hasn't stolen from somewhere else?

There may be now if he stays.

While Stan NEEDED to win last season (he was just 19-53 in Big East conf games during his first 4 years at USF)...he is still one of the lower paid coaches in the Big East.

His agent could easily be using the SMU job to help his client get a lot more $$$$ at his current job...as SMU is proposing offering a qualified coach $2 Million per year plus scores of other program benefits, which is well over 2 times the salary that Stan is receiving at USF (currently earning $875,000 per year before bonus).

Here's a quick look at the salaries at the 9 Big East teams in this year's NCAA Tourn:

Louisville: Pitino: $3,900,000
Marquette-Williams: $2,834,685
UCONN-Calhoun: $2,700,000
WVU-Huggins: $2,015,000
Georgetown-Thompson III: $1,894,988
Syracuse-Boeheim: $1,521,370
Cincinnati: Cronin: $1,255,000
USF-Heath: $875,000
Notre Dame-Brey: $573,974 (3rd party income not listed)
Not saying this would stop SMU but I would estimate Heath's buyout right now would be roughly a little under $700,000.

As a side bar.....about Heath. His relationship with USF and the AD seem pretty good. I would understand if he left for an additional $1 million or so a season....but another piece of the puzzle is his son Josh. Right now he is a sophmore in HS at Tampa Prep and won the BB state title.

So would Heath leave his family in Tampa for 2 more years while he coaches in Texas or would he uproot his family and son in the middle of his HS career?

Both are completely feasible options for the extra money.....I just think it would be another variable that could play a role in his availability.
Coaching search seems to be getting even stranger:

Latest from Dallas Morning News:

Larry Brown reaffirms interest in SMU, but says he's 'not crazy' about coaching games

From article below:

"I don’t know about games. I’m not crazy about coaching games, but I love practice.

Interesting history on Larry Brown's last college stop (Kansas) where he bolted from the program right before the program was slammed with NCAA violations and was teetering on the Death Penalty.

N.C.A.A. Acts Against Kansas

From article below:

The N.C.A.A. also ordered the school to show cause why it should not be penalized further if it fails to disassociate three unnamed boosters from the program, ''based upon their involvement in violations of N.C.A.A. rules.'' 'Death Penalty' Considered

The N.C.A.A. said it seriously considered shutting down the Kansas basketball program for an entire year. Only Southern Methodist's football program has been punished with the so-called ''death penalty,'' which can be used for repeated violations.

Insert all the Allen Iverson jokes ever here.
Hire Larry Brown as director of basketball ops. Gets to go to practice, has zero role in the games. Problem solved
Or hire him for the Gene Keady bench role. Except I'm sure he wants head coach money.

Money is not an issue. Our boosters had enough money in the pot to pay Buzz Williams 3.5 per year plus pay his $2m buyout

If Brown isn't HC, Benford will be, I think. And he wont command 2m+ like some of our other targets have, leaving plenty of money for Brown.
They should hire Benford from Marquette and bring in Larry Brown as a special assistant to help coach the coaches. Just like Steve Lavin and Gene Keady at St. John's. That way good assistants will want to come to SMU, good players will want to come and the boosters are happy with the big name association.

Lavin worked under Keady, I doubt if Benford and Brown even know each other.
Is this heath interview at SMU real or speculation? Heath just got USF in it's first tourny app in 20 years. Right now he's the major BMOC. Given his ties to the area, the major renovations Sun Dome almost completed at USF, he's going to be set for life. Recruiting should get much, much easier now. I can't believe he'd leave a BE school just to go to another BE school. I'd expect USF to give him a big payday after last season. Also worth noting, Heath was close to being on a hot seat fairly unsuccessful in 5 (?) seasons so far... but he sure got it done last season and the upgrades should help him get solid talent from now on...

At his low salary...especially compared to many others in the Big East, he certainly doesn't seem "set for life" and most coaches realizes, the difference between a halo (USF's 12-6 season this year) and a noose (3-15 last year) is just 6 inches.

Heath has to "cash in" this season somewhere (USF or another school)...as future success is never a given (at most schools...maybe a few...maybe).

Odds are his agent is using the SMU job so that Heath (and him) can get PAID (i.e. new contract, means new $$$ for both).

Who knows. Laken Litman reported it, but she has not broken a story in...ever.
