AndyKatz is reporting UConn's appeal has been denied. Tough break for their basketball program.

Quote:Not surprising that UConn's last appeal was denied. This makes Alex Oriakhi's decision to leave easier. Next up to decide Drummond/Lamb.

This means that UConn won't participate in the 2013 Big East tournament and/or any postseason.
Yikes. Could this be the end of Calhoun?
Did anyone seriously expect it to come out differently?
Here's an article from the Hartford Courant:

UConn Appeal On Postseason Ban Is Denied By NCAA

3:28 p.m. EDT, April 5, 2012

UConn’s appeal for NCAA Tournament eligibility in 2013 was denied by the NCAA’s Committee on Academic Performance, the school announced on Thursday.

This isn't a surprise, but it places UConn in a position where they are coming off an 8-10 season in conference play. Then the differences from this season to next year are:

-Ineligible for Big East and NCAA tournaments
-Drummond very likely leaves for NBA
-Lamb very likely leaves for NBA
-Napier is 50/50 to leave according to NBADraft.net
-Oriakhi is transferring
-Everyone else can also transfer with no sit out year if they want
-The only incoming player currently signed is 6' 3'' Omar Calhoun (4 star SG) (Correct me if I'm wrong here)

It's going to likely be a long season next year for the Huskies.

I'm not sure about the transfer with no sit out year....

first off- that's just for schools on probation. Don't think APR is equal to probation in the sense of transfer options.

2nd off- that would just be for folks that would be seniors. It's just for those that careers would end w/o possibility of postseason...
USC had 2 year postseason ban in football. In 1st year- any jr or sr could leave with no penalty.
in 2nd year- only sr could leave with no penalty.
NCAA apparently approve a waiver for ULM.

I think we just want to know where is the consistence in all of this? Punishing current students for the academic record of students no longer at the school is a joke. I am guessing NCAA wants to make an example out of UCONN.

Our AD put it best with the quote below:

http://www.uconnhuskies.com/sports/m-bas...12aaa.html

Quote:"When this change in legislation was adopted by the NCAA Board in October 2011 and made effective for the 2012-13 academic year, it gave the illusion that institutions had time to adjust to the legislation. Yet the data had already been submitted under a different penalty structure, one that would not have excluded our men's basketball team from participating in the post-season," said Manuel. "The approach to APR marks the first time in the history of the NCAA that it has ever implemented an academic rule significantly impacting current student-athletes without allowing the members time to adjust to the adoption of the legislation.

"In recent months, CAP chairperson and University of Hartford President Walter Harrison has been quoted as saying that CAP wanted to provide institutions with `a chance to adjust'. In actuality, these changes were a retroactive application of the rules. It remains the belief of the University of Connecticut that CAP and the Board of Directors should consider delaying the effective date of the implementation for all institutions to 2013-14, and/or use the APR scores from the 2011-12 academic year to determine postseason eligibility for the 2012-13 year."

UCONN's other 23 athletic programs all have APR of 945 and above. Current basketball players have APR of 985. I wonder if a lawsuit is coming.
SFHusky I agree...a coach has very little leverage over guys who have declared their Spring Semester. Stupid rule.

That transfer rule only applies to JR and SR. UCONN only has one player that fits that category and that's Alex Oriahki. He is transferring and Squid and UNC are already on him.

As for Andre Drummond and Jeremy Lamb, I expect both to declare for the NBA since both will be lottery picks. Drummond is top 5 and Lamb is top 13 in all projections. It would be stupid for both to stay if they are both lottery picks.

Naiper, Griffey and Boatright already said they are staying. There is a rumor Naiper might declare for the NBA but he already said he is not ready and will be back to UCONN. Incoming recruit Omar Calhoun (NY Gatorade player of the year) said he is committed to UCONN and is coming.

UCONN will have one year it won't make the NCAA if the punishment will stay, but I don't expect much drop off in talent especially if UCONN can land another big man or two to replace Oriahki and Drummond.
Thanks for the correction on who is allowed to transfer with no penalty. Napier is somewhat in the same boat as Siva. There are rumors of both leaving, but they would each be doing that with knowledge that they will not be receiving a guaranteed 1st round contract.

It's late in the game but are there other guys UConn is likely to sign this month to replace the departures due to early entry and transferring?

I think it is stupid UConn can't play in the BE Championship...So what if they win it...the BE will still get their usual 8 or 9 teams.

Cuse was on probation back in 1993 IIRC and they were allowed to play in the BE Championship...they lost to Seton Hall in the Finals.
This is the second time the NCAA has punished us over this. Disgusting.
Last one out of Storrs, turn out the lights.
I know it hurts the Big East, but I want UConn to go through what Cincinnati had to live through when Nancy told Huggins to get out. I expect the Huskies to be trash next season.

I wouldn't wish what happened at UC upon anyone, even my greatest enemy.
I don't get people saying let UConn play in the BET just because the BE is good for 8-9 total bids anyway.

There is clear, recent precedent to keeping a team banned from postseason play ineligible for a conference tournament or championship game. Why even potentially throw away an auto-bid? Doesn't make any sense.

Sucks that the NCAA punished UConn like this, but since they did, I don't see why the BE or any other conference should or would risk an auto-bid just for giggles.
The punishment is not just post season bans...trashes perception and recruiting. This gift is supposed to sting for a couple years.
Hathaway and UConn saw this coming for years. Chasing off players is not the way to go.

Its just a one year sting in regards to recruiting...and since the Nov signing period is already over (believe UCONN already has one player signed), it might hurt recruiting for the late signing period for UCONN (mainly because of some players leaving for the NBA), but its just a 1 year penalty for post-season play.

There are still scores of benefits of playing in the Big East...getting lots of pub, etc...and since most players at UCONN are not one-and-done...UCONN might come out of this in ok shape, much better than what others think.

Recruits this summer/fall (that won't play till 2013-2014...and won't have to deal with the post-season ban), will still see the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP Banners and odds are, UCONN will land some good players next year.
I'm sorry... UConn knew for years the previous APR structure and they thumbed their nose at it. I'm not upset about them being banned now. UC had issues with their APR after Huggins and Kennedy left (thanks to them basically trying to kill the program) and Cronin recruited true student athletes.
