I don't think anyone who is realistic can expect more than a .500 season this year. We'll be playing with unproven guards, and that's a large handicap. I think we might be able to win 10 conference games with a little luck and some OOC experience.

If the team jells this year and everyone we want returns next year, we could contend for the regular season title in 2013-14. But this season will be totally unpredictable. It could be a fun year with a lot of new, hopefully good, young players, and who knows. Lightning might strike and we get hot early and have a really nice year. Every year is a fresh beginning, which makes it exciting.04-cheers
I do. I think we will have one of the best front lines in the league. And I think the juco guards step up big this year.
We will win in the 17 game range or more.
Seventeen games in the regular season would be acceptable this season.
We had a very young team this year and a lot of newcomers and that is why we were picked to finish 5th in the west. We started two seniors and in the OOC schedule THREE newcomers including two freshmen. We were in all but a few OOC games and even led Kentucky at the first media timeout in the 2nd half. By SBC played we had settled on a starting lineup that included 2 seniors, 2 sophomores and a freshman. One of the sophomores was newcomer Will Neighbour. Hmm, we won the west.We are losing three starters, but still have a very experienced team coming back in WN, Leeper, Javes, Dillard, Fondren, Lawton, White redshirting and another good recruiting class coming in. We will win 17 to 20 games next year.

Here we go again. The excuses are already coming in case we do have a bad year. I agree with Pappy about our bigs, but the guards are definitely a question mark, especially at the point.
I think we have to be realistic. I'm not making excuses. Just looking at the possibilities. I think we'll be pretty good. Great? Probably not, but sometimes lightning strikes when you least expect it. Solo's shot in the SBC tournament for example.

I do not think we have any excuses for a bad year. We may not have a great year, but it if is not a pretty good year, I for one will be greatly disappointed.

I've learned after following this program for many years that I will be disappointed more often than not. And if next season is another disappointment, the Shields fan club will dust off the well worn excuses, too many new faces, injuries, no guards than can shoot, and lack of a point guard, and then proudly proclaim, "wait until next year." I can certainly sympathize with Cub fans.

It's been one year since we won the Sun Belt Championship, not more than 100 years.

That's true, but the excuses are already coming, setting the case for another lackluster year. Some of our Trojan fans are about as good at making excuses as are hog fans. Their passion for their coach is somewhat understandable, he's a winner, at least on the field. Off the field and in the bushes and brush, maybe not. Our coach is only mediocre on the court. But, as far as we know, he's a winner off the court.

And if we have another 12-4 Western Division championship team, there is absolutely no telling what the Shields detractors will dust off.

Probably that some Shields fan club member will forget to include the OC and tournament losses, as one did this year, and someone will have to point out that OC and tournament losses count on your record also. 12-4 sounds great until you find out that the rest of the record was 3-12. In case your don't have your calculator handy, that works out to 15-16(2011-2012). Another losing record. It's getting to be a habit. It's a good thing they don't put the seasons record on those championship banners. They wouldn't look as good would they?

They would not. Come to think of it, I've never seen any records on any banners in any arena anywhere at any school in any country. Have you?

Yes, I've seen a few. I've seen some on banners of teams that had outstanding records. Not on banners of teams with 15-16 records though. I'd think that the Baylor women will probably have 40-0 on their NCAA championship banner.

Where have you seen one?

I've been in a lot of gyms over the years. You can go in most any high school gym,(undoubtedly some colleges)where a school has won a championship(primarily state)and you'll most likely see a championship banner with the team's record on it. That is, those that had a very good record. I don't recall seeing any with a losing record on a banner. There probably have been some, like some Trojan fans, that pride themselves in hanging a hanging, even with a team that has an overall losing record. I guess you could put 12-4 on it, and if people didn't know about the other part of the schedule, it would look good.

Just a thought, since some here are so big on hanging banners, we could have one made as City Champs, with the 1-0 record printed on it, for beating Philander Smith. Maybe we could schedule Arkansas Baptist College and if we could beat them, we could put 2-0 on the banner.

Some of this post was "tongue in cheek" Jim, most was fact. Ask a stupid question, and you'll get a stupid answer.
Charleston has an old gym full of them.

With their records on the banners?
