Full Version: Memphis Coach Mentioned SMU Last Night

During the football booster club meeting last night, Coach Fuente (formerly assistant offensive coordinator at TCU) was asked about next season's opponents. He replied that his entire focus up to this point has been on recruiting and spring practice, but did say that he knew "SMU can play with TCU". I thought you Mustangs might be interested to hear that. I will add that I think SMU was definitely one of the best teams Memphis played last year.
You are going to like him. He is a great guy, young and energetic and can coach.

We already do! Extremely organized, with a definite plan - going to be a fine coach. Our immediate problem task is getting the roster buillt back up to 85 scholarship players with plenty of upper classmen, as opposed to the current approximately 65 which are mainly youngsters. Our spring game is Saturday - it will be a scimmage instead of a game due to insufficient depth.

Thats awfully nice of him to say...especially after SMU BEAT TCU last year.

Since TCU lost to SMU last season...not sure how else he could have answered that question.
Memphis fans, I believe you have such an upside in football. I think this move to the NBE will propel you forward. That said I must say I enjoyed playing in CUSA, but hope to see all of us start smacking our OOC opponents as we move into our new conference together. We do have our work cut out for us with Baylor away, TCU and A$M home.
I like Fuente and think he will turn Memphis around.

Good point - I had forgotten that. 04-jawdrop

At first I thought this was about basketball and I thought "wow, way to be condescending about our crappy play this season!" Then I realized it was football related. Haha, hope Fuente can right your ship. A strong Memphis is good for all of us.
Going into the Big East, Memphis has had the worst team lately. If Memphis improves at all, the nBE is going to be so much better than the old Big East.

Not a question of IF - only when, and I wager it will be much sooner than many think. Tiger football has been good before and will be again.
I'm guessing three to five wins this year, and a bowl game next year. Assuming no one else regresses, the nBe will be better than the old Big East.
Fuente brings an energy and enthusiasm to this program that has been missing for at least 5 years. I have no doubt that he will get this ship floating again

with how are schedule is laid out, we could go to a bowl this season. We weren't far away for 5-7 last season. We blew double digit 4th quarter leads in 3 games last season.

On the other hand, we have since lost an experienced O-line and two very good defensive lineman (one of which will be a 1st-round NFL pick). Of course, on the other hand, we now have a modicum of QB experience, of course on the other hand, the offense is learning a new system, etc., etc.............Lot's of factors - winning 6 games this year would be a huge success in my book.

I don't think we have enough depth for six wins yet, but I'll stick with 3-5 wins depending on how many breaks we get.
atx better drive up from Austin to the SMU game.

We'll see. It's Halloween weekend and my girlfriends birthday(which is on Halloween) is usually celebrated on the preceding Saturday.
