Full Version: ACC-SEC scheduling agreement in the future?

I was on one of the Pitt TOS forums where someone started a thread about future OOC schedules. A Cane fan was of the opinion that the ACC and SEC will likely enter into a scheduling agreement much like the B1G and PAC. If this were to happen, then I assume that the ACC would maintain 8 conf games + a 9th game dedicated to one SEC opponent. Also, I would expect that the permanent cross division rivalry game will go away in order to allow 2 games to rotate among the other division.

Is this bogus or is there something to there being a possible agreement with the SEC on scheduling?

It's likely bogus because as history has shown the ACC never does anything smart regarding football.

Also I doubt you will see the permanent rivalry game go away because there is no way you will see Clemson, GT, FSU, Miami, NC State, Maryland or Wake vote for it.
While some fans have criticized northern expansion, it could very well end up being the reason the SEC would go for a scheduling alliance.

If there were a scheduling alliance with the SEC, then I think it'd sweeten the pot for rearranged divisions. Some schools may be willing to take a sacrifice if it means more more money, and a potential game with 'Bama, Fla, etc.

Why is that? The "outstanding" attendance for NCAA football up north?

The only school in the region that draws enough to interest the SEC is Penn State.

Clemson isn't going to give up games with FSU and GT for anything reasonable. That's an assured sellout each year. The only way I see us agreeing to revamped divisions is if we are in one with FSU, GT, VT, Miami, Wake, and NCSU since they are the only schools that seem to care about football and will be somewhat of a draw in football.[/quote]
More likely if this happens it'll be like the Pac12... 9 conf. games AND one guaranteed SEC game.
Figure that leaves each team with 1 FCS game and 1 neutral site game (or a non-return FBS)
Yay, now ACC teams can expect one ass-wiping each, at least once a year.

The SEC has a couple of doormats(Ole Miss? & Miss St.) for BC to beat since everyone else will get the better teams. Duke would probably get Vandy, so that's a crap shot.

I've seen the idea that if the ACC and SEC enter into a scheduling agreement, that some of the schools would become permanent cross over rivals (UGA-GT, UF-FSU, USC-Clemson) while the others may rotate. Who knows at this point.

From Pitt's perspective, if this ever goes through and the ACC keeps the 9 game conf schedule, then Pitt would likely have to dedicate 2 of the 3 OOC games to BCS level schools. One would be an SEC team and one would be dedicated to either ND or PSU, leaving one cream puff. This could get insane...
A basketball challenge would be fun. Seems that the trend is going to be having two such challenges in the future.
The only way I see this possible is if Clemson keeps the other USC, GT keeps UGA, and FSU keeps Florida. I'd like to play the Alabama's and LSU's of the world 2. I can't see this coming into fruition unless we start seeing a 13 week schedule plus a championship week.

A basketball challenge seems to be the way to go here.

Wake already has a long-term contract to play Vandy each year. Duke would get to lose to Ole Miss or Miss State - whichever one isn't playing BC.
I'd like to see UNC - Tennessee for sure. Or USC/UNC if they wouldn't mind playing both Clemson and us. I could see Virginia - Kentucky. Miami/VT would have to be matched up with Bama/LSU in some way I would think. Maybe the Pack v Auburn. Duke v Ole Miss. Then you could pair up Texas A&M, Miss St. Missouri and BC, Syracuse and Pitt any way you like.

Northeastern exposure for their planned network? I wouldn't be surprised to see an SEC powerhouse scheduling SU at MetLife Stadium in the near future. And Pitt is always an attractive opponent.

If this does come about, I hope we get either Kentucky or Tennessee.

The thing about this is it would be easy to find ACC rivals for all of the SEC East teams, but there really aren't any natural ACC rivals for the SEC West except for maybe Auburn & Alabama. I mean who is the natural ACC rival of Arkansas? LSU? Ole Miss? Mississippi St? Texas A&M? Even Missouri? Those teams natural rivals are in the Big-12. Likewise the Northern ACC teams - BC, Syracuse, Pitt, Maryland - natural rivals are in the Big East or the Big Ten. Even Mike London of UVa, when asked about playing a non-conference foe in a spring game, thought of WVU, not any SEC team.

I'm not saying I'm against it -- personally, I'd like to see Va Tech paired with Tennessee (it's the closest SEC team to VT, I think VT - 238 miles), both being located right off of I-81. I just think the best SEC/ACC rivalries are already being played (except maybe VT/TN).

Good point. Maybe the SEC East and ACC should merge while the Big 12 and SEC West merge. 03-lmfao

I would choose Tennessee too. Of the SEC west teams, I see aTm as a natural rival for VT as we are the only 2 BCS schools with a corp of cadets as well as civilian students.
aTm & BC. It's a mere 1800 miles. Awesome road trip for students.
It would be interesting if they could set this up. The TV networks would have to be behind this providing the $$$ but it would be possible. Not sure who Syracuse would get matched up with, probably Kentucky because of the basketball link.
