VCU, George Mason, and Butler have had discussions with the Atlantic 10, according to Brett McMurphy at CBSSports.com.

Sounds like UNCC is gone for the SunBelt...

So the SunBelt is going to at least 12 it sounds like.
Seems like a downgrade for all Charlotte sports, except will give the 49ers a 2015 BCS home after two years of independent FCS play of schedules they've already filled out. Question is, do they go ahead with further expansion of the stadium nearly immediately, or do they play downtown at Bank of America Stadium?
Good adds. Nice to see one conference do things right.

Sounds to me like they want to go to 16 w/ those 3, if/when Charlotte leaves for the Sun Belt then they can look for a replacement. Charlotte may get a fb only in the MAC and stay in the A10.

Charlotte hasn't fared very well in the Atlantic 10 and may like the change of pace that a more mid tier basketball conference would bring.

Charlotte out and Butler, VCU, George mason in allows the A-10 to move to scheduling pods...

Midwest: St. Louis, Butler, Dayton, Xavier, Duquesne
Northeast: St. Bonaventure, Fordham, UMass, Rhode Island, St. Joe's
Mid Atlantic: La Salle, George Washington, George Mason, VCU, Richmond

Virginia goes from a CAA state to an Atlantic 10 state overnight. George Washington is already a player in Northern Virginia and having GMU in the conference will magnify it as well as VCU a major state school only 1 hour south of DC.

I think Charlotte has made up its mind that they're going to look at the Alliance first then Sun Belt before they try anything with the MAC.

Once the SBC gets to 12 members they'll soon have a 3rd bowl game and as much to offer Charlotte as the MAC.
With those 3 teams in, it looks like the A-10 will remain in good shape and keep cycling a few teams each year in the NCAAs to maintain those units for the conference.

Perhaps, but it doesn't sound like a smart move. The MAC is the only conference that would put up with being football only (See: Temple, UMass) and A10 for the rest. Even if Charlotte isn't competing well in the A10, the Sun Belt is way too far down of a dip in quality and it would show up in their ticket sales.

If the goal is to get into the Alliance, then they should start with MAC football and improve performance in the A10. Even if the Sun Belt has an extra bowl tie, bowls at that level are more likely to LOSE you money than gain, and the exposure is minimal.
Charlotte will be in the Alliance.....ASAP....like it or not. 03-idea

At this point, I'd add the WAC to that list, geography be damned.

If A10 loses Temple and Charlotte, and replaces them with Butler, VCU, and GMU, that's 15 schools. Who's going to be #16?

well that means Charlotte went to the SBC. How about ODU to the MAC/A-10? or JMU MAC/A-10. The easy out could be Detroit to the A-10, no worries about where fb goes.

Creighton has also expressed interest in the A10.

Whoever they get, the A10 will be LOADED. It will easily be the strongest non-Big 6 basketball conference.

In Omaha Nebraska? I'd rather they take another CAA team.

Quite a ways from St.Louis really far from most of the A10.

A great basketball program, no doubt.

Ideas for new A-10 slogans after Creighton joins:

Atlantic 10: Our name is almost as geographically inaccurate as "Big East".

Atlantic 10: Neither Atlantic nor 10.
Its like they knew it was going to happen, the A10 moved their headquarters to Newport News Virginia several years ago.
So no Drexel or ODU?
