Well ... it looks like we'll be joining in full-league play the same time you guys do.
About right.
UNC's punishment: NC State will lose 10 scholarships the next 3 years and John Swofford gets a 50% pay increase.
OK Swofford....do the right thing here and tack on an additional year.

Yeah right.
Considering we lost quite a few kids for the year who were eventually cleared I would think there was an extra year.
Could have been more. Could have been less. I can't believe Davis came out of this with clean hands...again!

Yup -- that's the amazing thing in all of this. I'm almost certain John Calipari is sitting in his Lexington offices muttering, "D---, that dude is good."
I thought the 15 scholarships over 3 years was about right but I really expected at least a 2 year bowl ban. I think the NCAA went light on them for cooperating with the investigation.

Also, the 3 year probationary period comes after the 3 years of penalties correct? The probation is not served concurrently with the 3 years of scholarship reductions?

I think the probationary period is concurrent with the scholarship reductions as I believe I read it was 2012-2015, but I could be mistaken.

That's correct. I saw it on another message board after I posted.
Seems to fit the crime. At least to me.
Ouch!
Way more than expected, considering that the University (and not the NCAA) uncovered most of the violations. One has to wonder if any institution in the future will offer the NCAA the same "extreme coorporation" as UNC.
Considering that there was academic fraud involved I don't think these sanctions are harsh at all... maybe too lenient.

I just have 2 questions:
1) Can we get the ACC to add a 2nd year of bowl ban like they did to Clemson in the 80's?
2) Can we pin this on Swofford & kill 2 birds with one stone? ;-)
It's a shame this happened at UNC I admit. What's really too bad for the ACC is that we were so loaded in 2010, we could have played for the National Championship. I remember Mel Kiper saying with all the talent coming out that year, that if any team could have stopped Cam Newton & Co. it was the Tar Heels. Heck we were several players shorthanded due to the NCAA investigation and came a Zach Pianalto drop in the endzone in the last play of the game from beating LSU at LSU. We held back so many players that year from playing throughout that season, it might as well have been a season you would count as being penalized. But I think the future looks bright. We have an aggressively offensive-minded coach who is young and energetic and will recruit well. Davis would never blitz anyway and there's only so far you can go when you do that. As far as the sanctions go, the announcement was after signing day so it won't affect recruits really for this year, and the bowl ban is for 2012, so it won't affect recruits for 2013. We just have to be more selective and "get it right" when we make our offers in regards to the scholarship reductions.

I remember thinking I wish UNC had decided to just go ahead and play everyone in that first game, then start sitting out players beginning with game #2.

I agree, UNC could have beaten LSU... but like so many ACC/SEC games over the past 10 years, everything fell just right for the SEC and just short for the ACC team.
I thought the penalties were going to be far harsher than that...
Cooperative, my ass. Now it's time for Butch and the UNC compliance office to cooperate with the request for the 216 phone records. Then we'll see what was REALLY going on between Butch, Black Santa, other agents, and Butch's "I didn't know" argument will be shown to be the lie we all knew it was...
I think the only fair punishment is to require UNC to hire Debbie Yow* as AD and Randy Edsall as football coach...

... that'll teach 'em!

* REVISED: better yet, make 'em hire John Swofford back as AD and hire Cat Daddy as ACC Commissioner... that'll REALLY teach 'em!
