Whatever happened to all the talk about a Big East Network, which Paul Tagliabue was supposed to be studying/working on? Is that still a possibility or did I miss something?

You'd think it's the next logical step. The fact that we keep hearing about time zones and market shares would suggest it. The Big East has very marketable brands with Notre Dame, Georgetown, UCONN, Cinci, Louisville, Memphis, Marquette, Nova, likely Temple, etc. No matter what they say in North Carolina, Big East basketball is still king. And football too. With Navy giving up their indy deal and Top 15 programs Boise State and Houston joining with the BE holdovers (UC, UL, UCONN, USF, Rutgers), the structure of the nBe has all the ornamentals that make a network saleable.
Has this been seriously talked about before?
If Big East signs with Comcast/NBC a Big East Network is a must. You look at the Big 10 and Pac 12 TV deals and you’ll notice it is far lucrative long term compared to SEC and ACC deals. No question will it be more difficult starting out because Big East teams usually isn’t the largest state school but with the amount of content and TV markets along with Comcast being the largest cable company it will make BE teams money.

Plus the BE has $20M extra for start up costs....
If there is a Big East Network the schools need to own it. Also take input from the incoming MWC schools. That conferences TV deal is what destroyed it and that included The Mountain channel, which is owned by NBC/ Comcast.
I don't care what you say, if we have all the major urban markets that we're obviously planning to have, a Big East Network (I'd call it "Big BEN") is a no-brainer. No, we wouldn't have the tradition of the BTN, but it would still be worth any network's while to make it happen.

racist. Why is it open season on italian-americans? over it. If i used similar slurs like this against other ethnic groups the pc police would be out in full force...but it's ok to refer to an Italian as a meatball or spaghetti eater? I mean WTF?

If Big East teams don't own at least part of the network and get the revenue there's no point since it will exactly like the old ESPN deal. By owning part of the network it will be easier for schools to sign over their grant-of-rights because they'll be seeing a portion of the profit.

They need to take the SNY approach or the Pac-12 approach. I prefer the Pac-12 approach myself. Work with the big cable companies in our areas which is likely to be Time Warner, Comcast, Cox and Cablevision plus Verizon and DirecTV to get this thing available to as many people as possible at launch. Get it on extended basic in our home markets:
Statewide - Rhode Island (Providence & UConn), Connecticut (UConn), New Jersey (Rutgers and Seton Hall), Idaho (Boise), Maryland (Georgetown and Navy), Indiana (Notre Dame)
DMAs: DFW (SMU), NYC (Rutgers, Seton Hall, UConn and St. John's), Philly & Lehigh Valley (Temple, Nova and Rutgers), Louisville (Louisville), Cincinnati & Dayton (Cincy), Chicago (DePaul and Notre Dame), Houston, San Diego, Orlando/Space Coast (UCF), Tampa/Sarasota/Bradenton (USF), Memphis, Milwaukee (Marquette), DC (Georgetown and Navy)

Availability is a big key, but also it needs to be owned by people with a vested interest in growing it. Once the TV is inked, if it's owned by the networks and the conference improves the network is all of a sudden getting a better deal and will see no reason offer any of the increased revenue to the conference. They'll simply let it erode to nothing and pick up a different product when the contract runs out. That's exactly what has happened and is happening with the MWC. What specifically is the SNY approach?

The Pac-12 owns 100% of their network, they just worked with the cable companies to ensure it gets picked up. That's what I'm advocating. The SNY approach is where the conference owns the lion's share of the network but has a couple of the cable companies (Time Warner and Comcast in SNY's case) come in to take very small ownership stakes and ensure they pick it up from the get go.

Oh okay, that makes total sense then and I agree with your take. Thanks for the explanation! 04-cheers

Sorry Bull... I said "Spaghetti" due to his stature, not his nationality. Anything involving food is certainly an operative nickname for that guy 03-lmfao

My bad...
I changed it to "Muffin-man".

I mean, jeez... it's only food for Pete's sake... 03-nerner

You can make fun of my Scandinavian-German-Dutch-English "heritage". I don't care. Ethnic jokes have no effect on me.

When I was a kid, we told ethnic jokes and poked fun at each other without fear. Kids today would be expelled from school for the things we said 30 or 40 years ago.

Kids today would be expelled from school for stuff we were saying 15 years ago.
"Muffin Man" is also an old Zappa tune 03-nerner
