OK, the Owls may not be gone yet, but with the Big East, it seems like only a matter of time. So, with almost a decade in the MAC, here are some ramblings about what the future may hold for Temple and the MAC and how they'll be remembered.

A lot of the "bandwagon" fans made too much noise, but the school itself has always been a joy to work with and the true fans have been great.

Nice article. For me the potential move to the Big East is that it will get all sports in one conference. That being said if Temple football remained in the MAC, I'm one fan who would be good with that.

I hate to see Temple leave but would be happy to see them in a good all sports conference.
Nice article. I remember that WMU win (in fact WMU owned Temple before and after their MAC entrance, winning EVERY game against them).

I like the Temple commentor (post article ) who states "The fact is, no team in the MAC has had more success in the past 3 seasons than Temple". 03-lmfao

They had not one win over any MAC team that had a record over 500, in the past 3 years or ever.

I, for one, am glad they are leaving. Although, I will say, they did what was best for their program (both using the MAC to stay alive and moving to the Big East at the first chance).

Having them in the conferance, provided many wins for WMU, but they had their heads out the window every day looking for the Big East to come along and provided a instability that was uncomfortable.

Adios, but please keep scheduling us.
I don't have the numbers handy but I think it was more like 4th best record over the past 3 years based on winning percentage. Ohio I believe is #1 over that same time frame, again based on overall winning percentage.

So success at Temple is beating the weaker teams and losing to the better teams in the MAC? Good luck in the BE, but it will probably be a while before you see much success. Ask Marshall (who actually did have more success than anyone in the MAC).

Nope...wow a Temple fan that short changed their team & giving too much credit to Ohio!

Ohio vs WMU in the MACC this year is likely without Temple in the MAC and more likely if they do not play each other in the regular season.

Have you seen the teams the BE invited? They will be at least the middle of the pack AFTER this year.
I was just thinking of regular season won/loss.

1. Technically true. Temple defeated WMU 49-17 in 1986 but Temple subsequently forfeited the game because Paul Palmer was ineligble.
Of course, you're right that WMU has dominated the series.

2. Have gotten tired of seeing this written since it's not true. Don't feel like figuring out how many times Temple has beaten a MAC team that finished the season with a winning record but I was at the 1984 game where Temple beat Toledo (8-3-1 and went to the California Bowl) 35-6.

I wouldn't mind seeing Temple play WMU again, though obviously I'd like to see a different result than in the past. Also, I'm still hoping to get to a game at Waldo sometime. I've got a client in Kalamazoo and have driven past it many times. Seems like one of the nicer MAC stadiums.

While in the MAC, Temple has never beaten a MAC team that finished the season with a winning record. Temple has been good and feasted on weak MAC teams, just never able to win against the best MAC teams while here.

Way to miss the point of what I wrote. Was responding to what I bolded in the quote that Temple has never beaten a MAC team that finshed the season with a winning record. Just pointing out an error of fact. I get it. You don't like Temple. Congrats.

Lets not forget they play in the East, too. It's like MAC West basketball. Quite a differance in competition.
In the poll on the link, I voted 'just another football team'

Because that's exactly what Temple was in the MAC...

You got me curious and I went back. That 1986 win vs WMU would not have counted because the Broncos did not end the season over .500.

True the 1984 win over 8-4 Toledo counts. However I looked back all the way to 1946 and that is the ONLY win over a MAC team that ended the season over .500 for Temple.

Two Ws for Temple that get thrown out on technicalities are 1979 and 1978 vs Akron as they didn't join the MAC till 1992.

Before I would say that since joining the MAC (2007) Temple has not defeated a fellow MAC team that ended the season over .500.

With this new info I now say...

Only once in the history of Temple football have the Owls defeated a MAC team that ended the season over .500 and that was in 1984.

As the Temple AD will likely schedule only lower level MAC East teams in the future it looks like I will be able to use this statement for a LONG time.

But in all honesty good luck in the Big East.

Was just pointing out that I think conaire misstated the stat that is thrown out there a lot, but I won't speak for him. I have no problem with Temple, just the fans than seem to think they were world beaters in the MAC when they never won anything. That's all.
I’m just curious as to the feelings of the MAC fans toward Temple moving forward if they do end up in the Big East. (I say IF because I’ve been down this road before, until the contract is signed and its announced by the Big East it’s not a done deal).

Would the diehard MAC fan rather see Temple football fall on its face in the Big East, being non competitive? But risk sending a message that the recent success Temple has had record wise in the MAC over the last 3 seasons was because of a weak conference.

Or

Would the diehard MAC fan rather see Temple go into the Big East and perform well, maybe even challenging for a Big East championship their first year? Sending the message that the MAC conference is much better than people give it credit for, and even a slightly above average MAC team like Temple can walk into an AQ conference like the Big East and compete from day 1.

I’m not saying either statement is true about the conference, I’m just saying that potentially those messages could be sent depending on Temples success (or lack of success) in the Big East.

If the situation was reversed and it wasn’t Temple going, it was another MAC team heading for the Big East I’m not sure how I would vote, I’m curious about the diehard MAC fans feelings.

I honestly don't think the average MAC fan cares what happens once Temple leaves. Temple feasted on bad teams in the East. Marshall's lack of success makes it easy for people to criticize the MAC since they were the top FB team before leaving. Temple was just better than average IMO.

In all of this moving around the only team I really hope does well is Boise State. They played tough OOC, beat Oklahoma in a BCS game and have been very good overall. I hope they show that they can compete in a non-AQ conference.
I'd probably say most MAC fans pay very little attention to the Big East. I imagine that would continue for the most part, although some will note how Temple does in their first season. Past that, there is not that much connection.
