The union will not let the mayor do anything, and he doesn't care enough to rock the boat. This is about protecting incompetent people who pay union dues.

Gotta try Bill, can't sit by anymore and do nothing. That place is a hell hole and I want change. If we go down trying, so be it. Been there, done that.

Oh, I agree. I'm just saying that this is grotesque and entrenched corruption that is guarded by a union that cares nothing about performance, only protecting its members.
As bad as they are you would think they were ran by the Memphis Police Dept and City school council combined.

Worse......
As a manager, I dealt with that union for over 15 years. It's a shame what the get away with in their contract. You would not believe the rules and steps that must be followed to discipline an employee, even for very serious offenses.

Looks like they are doing a pretty good job of disciplining the wrong employee. Dirty lowlife POS.

Not angry at all 03-lmfao
T what can we do? Can anyone step in ie US Humane Society? Have they implemented anything the Rotary Club suggested? Yes that is a rhetorical question. I get physically ill about this and there is so much the city could do to at least make the doomed animals last hours better.
Tanya, I am neither on facebook, nor in the area, but I have kept up with the threads on MAS, that is when I can bear to read them. 83msu has a great idea with the US Humane Society. I'd also suggest campaigning Best Friends. There seems to be so much documentation of the horrors which go on regularly at that place, and apparently have for years, and those two organizations seem to have been able to start to effect change in a lot of places.
Please sign this petition, it'll only take a minute.

I wish I knew what we can all do except make our voices heard. I have fought this fight many times and lost. It's been years and someone just got me all fired up again...so here I am. Depressing, maybe this time something will change. I don't know.

Hell no. I think the only way to get their attention is to stick together this time and not give up. There was a protest the other night I had not idea about...wish I had, would have been there. But I think we need another, something big and well organized. Not 50 people, but 5000. Going to try and work on it. If you're on Face Book or Twitter, join and follow us.
Animal Protection Association of Memphis forced a Humane Society of the US full-scale shelter assessment on the City about 15 years ago. HSUS has a nationally-recognized shelter accrediting program; they are the experts.

We got a detailed study and the City completely ignored it.

MAS has been a hellhole for my entire life, and I have intimate knowledge of it from my many years of work in local humane groups trying to effect change and my years spent on the Advisory Board there. I know of problems going back to the 1950's. The problem is basically one of hideous employees and management and unions. The Shelter has been a dumping ground for problem City employees for years.

Nothing EVER changes there, new building be damned. The small group of friends of mine, with the exception of a few, like Beverly King, who threw our entires lives toward making changes there for about ten years has had to disengage to save our sanity. That extremely stressful work cost several of us our marriages, no kidding. I applaud those now engaging this battle; I will do all I can, with the exception of ever stepping in that holocaust again. It would kill me.

The depth and breath of the HORROR of that place is without limit. Words cannot tell you what I witnessed there.

This is the biggest problem with all types of government workers. Way too much red tape. If someone isnt performing or doing their job appropriately there is nothing that can be done. The politically correctness and entitled attitudes is killing so many aspects of this country.
Once again, this is never going to change until the corrupt politicians, or the spineless ones who lick the boots of the union, decide that it is in their favor to do something about it. So far that hasn't happened, and it is now obvious that this mayor is just another all-talk, no-walk glad-hander like the rest of them.

I know the feeling girl, it's been a long fight with no results. At least it didn't turn us into Jeanne Chancellor...thank goodness.

We put him in that office, we can get his sorry ass out.

I'm not happy about how he has handled the MAS situation, but he has put the city back on track in a lot of ways. What scares me about getting rid of him is the fact that we could end up with someone like the former mayor again, and all of the progress would go down the drain. It would affect the university too.

The first thing he did as city mayor was address the animal shelter issue. Unfortunately, he did not follow up, and continues to rely on people who simply should be removed from their roles as overseers of the shelter. Their dismissive attitudes towards the whistle blowers and volunteers is disturbing - possibly they are suffering from burnout, CYA attitudes or their priorities are not right about animal cruelty. Either way, they need to be replaced with people with clear consciences and fresh ideas.

If we as citizens of Memphis continue to communicate with him and tell him the situation is not acceptable, he will have to take notice. Perhaps the interim director will have some authority and try to clean house - one can only hope.
