There was discussion around here about what advance notice was required. According to this article it is 2 seasons notice plus 2.5 mil.

Last year, the MAC added Massachusetts as a football-only member, beginning in the 2012 season. At the same time, the MAC put in place new exit provisions which state that any football-only member wishing to leave the conference would need to provide notice two football seasons before departure and pay a fee of $2.5 million.

Let's hope our commissioner takes them to the cleaners!

Wonder what the MAC office will do with the financial windfall?
Yeah, everyone seems to think we're all going to be rich, especially after that gets cut so many ways.

I believe the money will be used to guarantee ticket sales for bowl bids.

The reason we can AFFORD to do as many as 5 bowl games is that someone can afford to guarantee ticket sales to some bowl game 2,000 miles from one of our team's campus.

I don't see the MAC sending checks to member institutions.

(I'd assume the MAC office uses BCS monies now to guarantee ticket monies to the bowls).
So what's the payout if it's less than 2 seasons?
The reports I have read say Temple might have to pay $5 million to pull out immediately, That is a big hunk of change.

It's chump change in the world of D-I football.

Not in our part of the world

Depends on what part of that world it's happening. WVU needed a $10M loan from the Big12 to complete the $20M exit fee, which at that level of AQ was doable. Boise needed a $10M loan from the nBE, and they couldn't pull it off. $5M for Temple plus their A-10 penaly collected from various sources is easier but certainly not chump change.
That's only 380K per remaining school. Certainly useful, but not exactly a windfall.

I believe that WVU's exit penalty should be the starting point. If they had stayed their contractually amount of time their buyout would have been $5 mil. Since they accelerated it the amount is now $20 mil, or 4x the amount in their agreement. I wouldn't be surprised if the MAC started there at least, who knows what they would actually get?

Temple and the BE are the ones over a barrel at this point. The BE needs this done yesterday to fill their FB schedules. This is my guess why they are negotiating with Temple. If Boise said yes to an early exit none of this would be happening.

Who will be first to put a "price" on Temple? How about 5M? What Temple is 'worth' to the MAC.

BTW, any chance the move and buyout will still fail?
It's worth to the MAC is very little considering they were only a 1-sport participant and offset the balance for a few seasons. The MAC got very little from the odd marriage, hopefully they get the $$$ from the divorce. The Big East is obviously very desperate which is why they finally came calling, they expect it to be wrapped up ASAP and figure we'll all cater to them.

I thin 4* the buyout is fair. All the schedules have to be redone, seasons tickets need to be reprinted (I think some are ready to go)...

And the Big East itself seems to think 4 times the buyout is worth it.
lot of the exit fees are:

Conference X collects from Y and then uses those $ to pay Z so that a new school from Z can be used to replay the school from Confernce X.

In other words, the nBE will college from WVU and pay the MAC.
I would actually like some real comments from the Commish...
I want to hear more than getting money from a departing member...
How about a little more vision?
Start at 10mil and be okay with 7.5mil.

Only go down to 5mil WITH guaranteed game @ UMASS for FB in 2013 (1-1 ok too) and a guaranteed @ game (1-1 ok too) for every MAC East M/W BB team.
Dear Friends,
Yes, I too would like to hear more from the MAC Commissioner on this matter, especially since the league still has its newest member a football only school. Maybe they will also look to (what they perceive) greener pastures.
Lastly, if everything stays the same, does the MAC look for other schools to join the conference?

This is the big thing to me. The BE would be hypocritical to demand that from a departing member but turn around and say it is too much for Temple. The only hitch I see is that they are football only members for the MAC (which someone already pointed out).
I wonder if the MAC tries 'to kill' Temple's move by asking for say 10M?
