Cincinnati Bearcats hold off Seton Hall to win 62-57

Dion Dixon scored 20 points and the University of Cincinnati Bearcats turned back a late comeback attempt to defeat Seton Hall, 62-57, Saturday afternoon before 13,003 fans at Fifth Third Arena.
The Bearcats used their 3-point shooting to build a 15-point lead in the first half and never trailed after that.
UC (19-8 overall, 9-5 in the Big East) has won four of its last five games to remain in a tie for sixth place with Louisville. Seton Hall (18-9, 7-8) saw a three-game winning streak come to an end.
Cashmere Wright added 13 points and made three of four 3-point shots for UC. Jordan Theodore and Fuquan Edwin each scored 15 points to lead Seton Hall.
Trailing, 59-48, with 4:13 remaining, Seton Hall scored five straight points to trim UC’s lead to six points with 1:29 to play. After Dixon’s shot with the shot-clock nearing zero smacked off the backboard, the Pirates called timeout with 34.3 seconds remaining.
Theodore drove the lane for a layup to make it 59-55 with 29.7 seconds to play. Dixon made one of two free throws to put UC ahead, 60-55, with 28.7 seconds left. Theodore then air-balled a 3-point shot that went out of bounds to the Bearcats. UC closed out the victory despite making only three of six free throws in the final 28.7 seconds.
The Bearcats rediscovered their 3-point shooting touch in the first half when they made 7 of 12 from long range and rode that accuracy to a 30-15 lead with 5:30 left in the half. That’s when UC’s Yancy Gates was called for a technical foul for pushing Seton Hall’s Theodore after Theodore fouled Gates while Gates was securing a rebound.
Theodore made both free throws – his first points of the game – and the Pirates scored five straight points to cut the deficit to 10. By the end of the half, Seton Hall had closed to within nine points, trailing 37-28.
UC did a good job defending Theodore and Seton Hall forward Herb Pope, the Pirates’ leading scorers at 15 points per game, limiting each to four points. Dixon scored 11 points for UC in the first half, with Wright scoring 10.
