Full Version: WVU paid $20 mil to get out of the BE in 2012. Is it worth it for Pitt and Cuse?

Now that WVU and the BE have finally settled on a figure, is there any chance Pitt and Cuse get out in time for 2012? The payment included WVU paying the rest of Boise's buy out to get out of the MWC this year, I assume that Pitt and Cuse would have to pay the difference to get 2 of the CUSA teams to join a year early. I think the price is probably too high and time too short for 2012 but 2013 for a lesser amount is a lock. :lock:
Hate to say it but I think its bad PR for Pitt to make that move. Gov Corbett is lowering funding to Pitt and the other State Uni's. So I don't think its a great idea to pay 20M to the Big East, while the students are forking over more and more money for tuition. Will be interesting to see.
SU and Pitt should probably ride it out a year. Hopefully we do well in the pathetic 7 team Big East. Then head into the ACC, on a good note.
As much as I hate to do it; I think we wait another year and then begin play in the ACC in 2013. Besides, at this point it might be difficult for the ACC to accommodate Pitt & SU for 2012.
Seems like a waste of money.
I think we're all on the same page here. 2013 is the year it will happen.
It may not be the best use of funds but I do think it would be worth it.
I think it totally depends on the actual number of the negotiations, so we are just guessing based on incomplete information. If the ACC gets $1 or $2 million more per school then I don't think it happens. But if the ACC gets $3, $4 or $5 million more per school then I think they'd chip in $1 mil apiece and let each school cover the rest. It would be a major net plus to the budget of each school including SU and Pitt.
I'd prefer to wait until after the Big East signs their next contract to finish the negotiations. I have a feeling the new cast of no names in the nbe is going to get a lot just based on markets.
$20 million is way too high for Pitt and SYR.
Riding out one mor season won't hurt anyone.
However, my understanding is that SYr can't get any of the BE NCAA tourney run money. But I said all along, at this point it's just about the BB schools cashing out- they don't give two hoots about the new FB members.
I had not considered the tournament. Does Syracuse and Pitt forfeit TV money, NCAA money or both? SU and quite possibly Pitt will be back in the tourney next year. I'd say cut your losses and get out.

It's my understanding (sorry no link) that the B12 "loaned" WV the balance of the buyout. I can't imagine the ACC would be opposed to a similar arrangement.
i just want to get the eff out. as soon as we can.

As I understand it, we get the shares we would get if we stay, however any BB credits we accumulate will stay with the Big East once we exit and we will not enjoy the full payouts on them. Since the credits are paid a year in arrears, anything earned this year will benefit us very little. I am pretty sure we still get the TV payouts and the other revenues while we are still members. We do not share in any exit fees collected from TCU and WVU.
Just be glad you announced your departure before the exit penalty increase, because it's now $10-million, 27-month notice, and forfeiture of tv payments during exit.

Personally, I think sticking around could benefit them, a bump up of the Big East television money for 2013, could pay for the move out on its own! NBC Sports threw record money for FCS football yesterday in a bidding war with CBS Sports, anyone who thinks the Big East on the open market isn't going to score a PAY DAY between NBC, CBS, FOX, and ESPN is now in denial.

In regards to the ACC paying, the Big 12 paid to keep from failing to meet their tv contract requirement on a $90-million tier 2 Fox agreement. I can't imagine the incentive for the ACC would be there; adding a million isn't like losing ten million plus... I also think it'd make the ACC look bad, considering its on record saying it has asked the schools to abide by the conference bylaws. The only way those two get out early is if the Big East says okay, "we don't need you anymore, you can leave for this much money." *cha-ching*
