How many running back scholarships are available? Is Childs still a possibility?

They work well for the Astros.

I don't know, but my guess would be that the size of this class and our relative depth at RB would make this look like a 1-RB class.

Consistent with that they held off recruiting other RB's while giving Childs ample opportunity to mull over his offer...

Looks like he's comfortable with the Meerkat Offensive philosophy ... and is particularly effective against defenders who can't tackle.

I'd love to see the final scores of the games that are featured on highlight reels like this. It seems like there'd be a bunch of 63-zip outcomes.

Let's hope he lasts longer than Shane Turner. I worry with these running backs that are small.

He's about 25 pounds heavier as a high schooler. And probably an inch or two shorter. So what you have is a significantly more bulky frame, built more like a bowling ball. Similar to Tyler Smith after a few years in the S&C program...

And those YouTube highlights At Ease posted are from Jowan's sophomore year. There are more up to date Junior highlights on his Rivals profile.

I like how he looks. He's fast and strong. Height in RB's is overrated, and we already have several tall RBs (Petersen, Eddington, etc.). Let's hope he can by like Tyler Smith, or a Maurice Jones-Drew type!
Yes gambling with speed and quickness is good but to be seriously honest any decent cb can be effective against Hirt and mid range routes. That isn't special. Being able to defend the deep ball, our Achilles heel the past several yrs, is whT we should be gearing towards and truly looking for.

Now with that said...as I stated he has TONS of potential. With coaching and reps YES we could be very very good. His 4.5 does bother me butnive seen guys about his speed be very effective. He will get faster and depending on whether he can adapt to being patient he could be really good. What I love about him is his body angles are Lways consistent. This allows for that great change of direction and explosion off the ground.

From what I know child's offer is still on the table. I do know that his mother LOVES rice, h really likes it as well. There are some metigating circumstances as to why he hasn't committed or made a decision anywhere. As much as I would like for him to be an owl, he DOES have the right to make sure he is making the best decision possible for himself. This is a huge decision and he wants be sure he makes the right one. You can't hold that against him. He doesn't want to committ and them another offer comes along that is perfect for him and he decommitts. He isn't that type of kid. He wants to committ and KNOW nothing else is going to sway it.
The relative height of a rb normally goes with a Derain weight as well. Yes we all can name a few short rbs that were success for a decent period of time. We can name a heck of a lotore that weren't. And vice versatile for taller rbs. Looks like thy are tryin to adopt the thunder and lightening philosophy. They don't think they can get a back that have both so they are trying to get some real speed and agility to go along with our straight ahead runners.

As a defenive player it is a pain to tackle a big guy then come back and the next play/series have to tackle a shifty guy.
Excuse my typos on my iPhone and the spell check is taking over....lol
This kid is fast and strong. Good pick up!
Wait, I thought we had supposedly stopped going after early commits because they supposedly tended to not pan out? I guess we abandoned that supposed strategy.

Well....it's hard to argue with. 03-wink

Wait, I though we were going to stop making smarmy remarks about all things associated with Rice athletics just because the board provides some level of anonymity and a poster (the one making the post) thinks the remark might be funny instead of just plain sad. I guess we abandoned that supposed approach to upgrading board quality. 05-stirthepot

If somebody promised not to be snarky, it certainly wasn't me. Perhaps you can take consolation that this snark was directed towards the subscription peddlers instead of the coaches or players.
Who is Cole Reid - the TE listed on this Texas top 100 recruiting list? Is it supposed to be Cole Hunt?

Yes, it is Cole Hunt.

Doc, all due respect but if that remark about anonymity was directed at Gravy, it's a cheap shot. He doesn't need me defending him but Gravy is one of the most astute posters on this board.
Brookes, the remark, while in response to Gravy's remark, was not intended to be directed at Gravy as much as at the denizens of the board in general. I for one (and I think one of a majority here) think the board as a whole is just so rife with sarcastic comments belittling Rice Athletics and everything associated with them, from the AD to the coaches and in some cases to the players and recruits, that it is hard to read without being p.o.'d afterwards. It is easy to find something you don't like and belittle it without offering any alternatives which you think might be better. But easy does not equate to right or better. I have often been left thinking that, while I do not believe the rumors that pop up here periodically about how the Rice administration (or Rice athletic administration, depending on the iteration of the rumor) ignores this board and those of us who post here because we are whining, sniveling malcontents who stir the pot and offer nothing positive or constructive, are true, the stated basis for the supposition is understandable. This board DOES have more than its share of whining, sniveling malcontents who stir the pot and offer nothing positive or constructive who, when called on it, try to pass it off as sarcastic wit. Gravy and I are both offenders when it comes to throwing out sarcastic comments here. This particular comment by Gravy just pushed my button because it is so much like the snarky comments that I abhor seeing here. Gravy's comments usually don't push that button and to lump him into the "always negative" camp like I did was unfair of me and for that I apologize. But I reiterate and stand behind my point that all snark, all the time gets old and is counterproduction and should be curtailed.

JMHO.

Generally agree, but two quibbles:
1. i hear snarky comments about the recruiting, but not about individual recruits,
2. i think you are in the minority, not the majority. JMHO.
