No, I would be concerned that they would immediately try to convince Temple, UMASS, Ohio, Miami & Buffalo (along with Western KY) to split with them to form a new conference.

I don't think there is an mechanism for a new FBS conference is there?
But if thats what they really wanted (and if it were possible for a new conference) They, along with SM could court them as it stands now.

I've been advocating inviting Memphis and ECU for a while now. Since Memphis is off the board, I'd still like to nab ECU and maybe entice Southern Miss now that they lost one of their dancing partners.

And I wouldn't piss on Marshall if they were on fire.
Neither of these schools would have any interest in joining the MAC, even with the latest setback in C-USA fortunes. If C-USA disbands (not likely IMHO), then yes, there'd be a fit as Marshall and ECU would be in a real tough spot then.

ECU is worth it. Marshall heck no. Except for a few posters Marshal fans are no fun to be around and I don't feel the schol offers much except for more regional foes.
ECU would likely try to be independent and see if it can still work for them before trying to go to the MAC (or at least that is what the fans will say).
There are other teams that are worth it from CUSA but we will have to wait to see what the MWC does now. If there was a conference that would steal food from a starving man (green archer needs food now!) it would be the MWC.

I think you are correct but I am mostly saying from a fan perspective that many would prefer to go independent (and die) than join the MAC. Now as an institution I don't know what they will do since old alumni can have a lot of sway in a place like that. Personally I like the idea of joining conferences and not being independent. We shall see what happens with the MWC. It really hinges on what they try to pull.

Things are cyclical. The fact that there are more independent programs now than just a few years ago makes me wonder if it's truly a problem. Especially w/ 12 game schedules. Plus, the more that go independent, the more workable it becomes.

TV contracts, bowl (BCS) revenue, .... There are more independents today?
You have Army, Navy, ND, and BYU. Like I said a service academy or an institution thats a religious icon. How many people, outside of their market, are going to sit down and watch an ECU game?
Then why would anyone give them real money for the tv rights. Today's tv contracts are a case when the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

As an AAU member, UB should be disgusted with the idea of inviting marshall "university" to the MAC.
