Full Version: At 18-2, would FGCU be the 1st ranked WBB of ASUN?

Currently they're receiving about 4 votes right now. They've got 8 some odd games left. Despite the league being dog crap this year, I think if they go undefeated in league play they'll be ranked before the conference tourney. Would that make them the 1st ASUN WBB to be ranked ever? If so, this would be exciting.

Rock on!

Thanks Statman101
No FIU was ranked on several occasions in the late 90s. In fact they were a 7 and an 8 seed and won games in the tournament.
Been so long since those days it almost feels like another league entirely. Only Mercer and Stetson were around when it was the TAAC (plus JU for 1 or 2 years, but not when FIU was up there)...maybe one could say if it happens FGCU would be the first ranked team of "the A-Sun era."
That's impressive by FGCU how they've been so consistently good in WBB.
Women's basketball in this league is unfortunately not very good. Take FGCU and Stetson out of the mix and no one left has an RPI over 265. The league is 29 out of 31 leagues. ASun is only ahead of the OVC and the SWAC.

All that means is no matter how good one team can be...if they don't win the conference title, the won't make the NCAA Tournament. It's sad really.

What if FGCU runs the table and loses in the ASUN finals? Any chance they'd get an at-LARGE spot?

Long shot at best, I know.
Depends on conference tournament upsets but their RPI which is currently 70 is not going to go up much if at all playing an ASun schedule.
In fact they have won 9 in a row, and their RPI has gone DOWN to 70. So not promising.
We're awful this year which isn't helping, and Belmont had some good teams but after Alisha Clark transferred to MT, then their coach quit it seems the Lady Bruins just became a disaster. If they can pick it up along with us, that along with FGCU and Stetson's girls would put together a decent league.
I also can't believe with so many athletes in Florida/Georgia that Kennesaw and UNF aren't front running in this conference with Gulf Coast.
The interest level of WBB is just too low. Mercer hired a quality coach and puts the pieces there to try and compete, but interest will always remain low. I don't watch the games. With football arriving soon at Mercer and Stetson the attention and money will be elsewhere. I applaud FGCU for their dominance, it's great for them and the league. They have alternate priorities right now with a lack of football. Baseball followed by WBB/MBB for FGCU. Baseball showing signs of fading after last season, too.
Mercer drew some good crowds when they brought in teams like Notre Dame and Georgia. Their attendance will improve when their team does, it's been a couple really down years for the Bears women without question.

FGCU had over 3K last night for their women's game vs. KSU - I've noticed they have started playing their A-Sun doubleheaders with the men's games on first. I think their women draw more and are the main event!

Kennesaw's women will be OK in the next year or two. I watched the KSU/Stetson game the other night, they're young, no seniors and they have the likely A-Sun Freshman of the Year, this little pocket sized 5'2ish point guard from Knoxville named Taylor Mills.
Even with a decreased budget, Mercer and Stetson are at a distinct advantage as you should be able to bring in some pretty quality athletic girls in Georgia. Football will also be the same way, truthfully if Mercer does things the right way with the lottery scholarship out there, they should get some damn good football players that might have otherwise gone Division II or borderline FCS scholarship/preferred walk-on.
I still fully believe that Mercer will have scholarship football in a few years.
Briana Williams of Mercer set the A-Sun single game scoring record with 54 points (holy poop!!) yesterday in a win over USC Upstate.
