I'm getting a car in a few days and I was wondering how much it was to get one of those UAB license plates?

I think it's $50.
It's $50 for any specialized plate.
It's $50 for a personalized plate.
However, if you get a specialized plate, you can get it personalized at no additional charge.

Remember, that's $50 in addition to whatever the tag for your vehicle was going to cost. If a regular one was going to cost you $60, then a specialty one will run you $110.
Also, of the $50, about $48.50 goes into UAB's general scholarship fund. That and it's a little surreal getting the big padded envelope in the mail with the return address "Alabama Department of Corrections, Atmore, Alabama".
If like all of it goes back to UAB we should all have them.

I inquired at the Pell City Courthouse. They said $50 and if you want particular letters, you will be limited to 5 spaces because of the Blaze figure on the left. You make the request if you want it with special letters and they check to see if they are not already in use. Don't wait until the end of the month so you have time to make changes if needed.

You can check the availability of the letters/tags on the Internet from home. I'm not sure the site but I remember doing it when I got my UAB license plate. Probably somewhere on the DMV site...
I bought one this past Summer. Whole thing cost me around $120. Love having that thing on the back of my car. That's actually the first time I can ever recall having to stand in that line at the County Courthouse for a tag renewal and come out smiling.
I can't get an "official" UAB tag up here, but I can get one from the 2nd rate campus to the southwest.

Close, but remeber you only get 5 characters on a UAB plate.
Mine is 5MAUG.
If you order online there is a limit to how long they will hold your request.
