I'll start.

When, exactly, did "Pedestrian Right of Way" become "Dodge the Pedestrian"? I drive through shopping areas around here (Kroger and such) and have learned that crosswalks and on-coming traffic mean nothing. People pop out from behind cars, don't even look and seem to be saying "I dare you to hit me". It's no longer enough to watch for other vehicles while looking for a parking space. You now have to be on extra alert for these morons appearing out of nowhere. Is it okay to run over them? I'm not familiar with the laws around here.
You can hit them unless they are talking or texting on their cell. Then they have the right to be as stupid as they desire. It's the dumbing of America. I'm loving it.

I'm not sure how the laws vary from state to state, but have you ever played "Points for Pedestrians?" It is one of my favorite games. Any pedestrian not in a designated cross-walk, or acting particularly idiotic, is fair game. The higher the level of idiocy, the greater number of points awarded. Bonus points are awarded for a variety of things---bad fashion, strange behavior, whatever. Should someone fall into the category of "has to turn sideways to fit their a$$ through the door," that's the highest number of bonus points you can earn. The most recent really high-point value pedestrian I've seen was a guy who was not only not using the crosswalk, but was jamming to his I-pod, singing at the top of his lungs [and very off-key], who then proceeded to stop in the middle of the street for an air-guitar solo. I kid you not. You don't actually hit them, but can amuse yourself tabulating their potential point-value.
Not as much fun as running them down, but I'll try it.
Be careful. That might put a dent in your car.
On a similar note, why do some people run/walk in the road when there are sidewalks? It drives me crazy especially when they have dogs.

The dogs make me really nervous. I'm always afraid they will veer out into the road, and it is not their fault their human's aren't too bright. What really irks me is when cyclists ride in the roadway when there are f-ing bike lanes!

People just don't have any manners anymore. It's all about self serving, greed, laziness, and rudeness to other people. Some people still have some sense, but many don't. If they are walking, they expect you to stop. If the roles are reversed, they still expect you to stop. They don't care, it's all about them.

Did you move back to memphis?

Most of the time we stay on the sidewalk, but if i'm jogging as well as running my dogs, i run the street. First of all, i only do this during the late late night and in my quiet neighborhood so really no one ever sees me. Secondly, i run the street with 2 leashed dogs, so they won't stop every two seconds sniffing some dog sh*t or whatever in the yards. Anytime i see a car anywhere near me, we run to the sidewalk.

I'm not sure what other people are thinking about.

Well, if you noticed all that in parking lots. I'm surprised you didn't make any mention on how people drive around here.
I was already familiar with that, lol. Funny thing is that I've lived all over the country and people drive like crap everywhere. I have to say that they are a bit more courteous elsewhere. That's the major difference.
Funny this. There are no such laws in S.A. where metallic darwinism reigns supreme, and careless pedestrians have the right to remain dead or maimed if they carelessly walk. The funny/dangerous part is how that pervasive mentality has to undergo a huge readjust, once we're stateside and behind the wheel.

Georgiatiger, their is no law for jaywalking in the state of TN, unless the law has changed. Any place a pedestrian wants to cross the street is considered a crosswalk and legal from a person or dog to cross.

My problem is that I'm a very courteous driver. Both for pedestrians and other vehicles. When someone simply steps in front of oncoming traffic (especially stepping from behind a parked truck) without even bothering to look, they are putting the onus on you to brake quickly enough to keep from running over them. You can't always see them coming in a crowded parking lot with people walking every which way. I find it extremely rude and highly dangerous. I have a problem with rude behavior.

Speaking of rude... I always use my turn signal when changing lanes. Always. Apparently, when there is a car behind you in the lane you want to enter, a turn signal is a signal for them to speed up before you can get over. WTF is wrong with people? I won't even go into drivers that text. What message are they trying to send that can't wait 15 minutes? Is it really worth them risking my life over?

Probably send the same message that people turn on their cell phones to check every 15 minutes during the show while in theaters. That could segue in to the next rant.....
After living in the Northwest for the past thirty years we recently moved back to the midsouth. And although it has taken me almost three years I have finally come to know some of the several changes in traffic laws since last I was here.
1: It is illegal to drive more than 2 feet behind the car in front of you
2: It is illegal to use your turn signals unless you are in a turn only lane
3: It is illegal to drive less than 20 miles above the speed limit (my understanding is that this law was passed in order to help the struggling oil company's)
4: It is illegal to ever yield the right of way under any circumstances
5: It is illegal to drive,or walk, or run, without a cell phone in your ear

I am sure there are others but I am only about a third of the way through the manual
6. It is illegal to stop more than 1 foot from the car in front of you.
7. When stopped you must always block any available entry way in an effort to prevent any more of the enemy from entering traffic.

I found three television news reports from this summer stating jaywalking is illegal in Memphis.
