Quote:DeAnthony Arnett, a former top-100 prospect from Saginaw, Mich., who arrived as one of the headliners of Dooley's first full recruiting class earlier this year, decided after the season to return to his home state to be closer to his father, who struggles with diabetes and has endured multiple heart attacks and surgeries. Arnett wanted to transfer to Michigan or Michigan State, but Dooley put the kibosh on those plans by restricting Arnett's release to Mid-American Conference schools.

"Coach Dooley, myself or anybody doesn't know what the future holds for my father," Arnett said in an email to ESPN's Joe Schad and other media outlets. "I feel that I represented the University of Tennessee the best way I can on and off the field and I feel I have earned the right to be released unconditional to all schools in Michigan."

But Tennessee doesn't agree. It has no problem releasing Arnett to an FBS school in Michigan — as long as that school is Western Michigan, Central Michigan or Eastern Michigan instead of the Big Ten heavies.
I already read about this. I have to agree with Arnett. There really is no reason for Tennessee to restrict him from Michigan or Michigan State unless they are on Tennessee's schedule in the next two years. He could tip them off on Tennessee's plays and so forth so that is why you say no in that case. But to just keep him from going to two schools because in the eyes of Dooley they are bigger and better schools and he really doesn't want Arnett to succeed since Dooley's ego is bruised by him transferring is just wrong.

That said, I'm glad he is coming to the MAC and he has the potential to be all-MAC. I kind of want him to pick EMU to help their program build and make the MAC that much stronger. WMU has a pretty good offense (though they will be replacing a lot at WR and after next year will replace their QB) and CMU has two great receivers that were freshmen and could be all-MAC in the near future. EMU needs him more than the other two, though I'm sure they all want him. He was a heck of a player in high school.

The man in the orange pants is being a world class A-Hole....

Not only is Tenn not in the B1G they dont even have Michigan or Michigan State as an OOC opponent in the next four years
After reading the article, I'm backing the Vols on this one due to their reasons. (Of course, I'm also a bit biased due to this situation possibly benefiting a MAC school.)

Doesn't the kid also have the choice of leaving school for a year to live with his father? Maybe even take some classes at Saginaw Valley to build up some gen ed credits. I believe he could then transfer ANYWHERE without losing a year of eligibility. Right?
That's right. Although I'm not a big UT fan, I can see (somewhat) of their reasoning process here. Maybe I'm in a grumpy mood this morning but if you ask me I think he should not complain about what's been handed to him (as it's been Tennessee's policy for a while, IIRC) and simply go to a MAC school. Like it's been said, he's got the potential to be an all-MAC player.
Maybe he should transfer from one UT to another!!! Go Rockets!!!
I remember this kid during the recruiting process. He made a video of himself wearing different college hats. I got the impression he was mocking MAC schools. I don't want him at C.M.U. If he wants to be near family members who are ill, he should hook up with SVSU or Northwood.
The EMU board has an extensive thread.

I believe EMU recruited him hard very early on.

IF he is denied an opportunity to go to MSU (or UofM), I'd expect EMU to make a significant effort.

He had a relationship with coach Charlie Baggett, who recently retired from Tennessee.

Maybe someone gets both a coach and star WR.

EMU does seem to make the most sense out of the 3 MI MAC schools.

Link to the video series.

I believe the kid was just clowning around. But I'm 99% sure he knows he is "way too good" to play in the MAC, especially given his latest episode of stirring stuff up with the media on the Tennessee situation.

Antonio Brown or Greg Jennings could provide some life-lessons, but something tells me Arnett won't be swayed. After reading a good bit about him, I won't be surprised if he turns out to be another Charles Rogers. For his sake, I hope I'm wrong, but it sure seems at this juncture the guy is making a lot of poor decisions.
Sitting out a year and dictating where he can attend seems oppressive. It would be one thing if it was IN conference ,but for Tennessee to dictate with a NATIONAL scope is overboard. Would love to see the NCAA lose a law suit based on restraint of trade.
Seriously when was the last time Tennessee was actually relevant on the national scale??? If the kid wants to play at Michigan or MSU then let him.
TN deserves all the bad PR they'll get from this.

Just like Verizon got for their billing charge. 04-chairshot
Per ESPN, when he made the official request for transfer today he was given a release to attend any school in Michigan, including Michigan State and Michigan.
Go Sparty!
It seems this kids father has been ailing for awhile and not just the past 4 months he has been at the school. With that said, why on earth did he decide to go so far from home to begin with? Why not go to one of those FBS schools in-state straight out of high school? It's not like he's in his 3rd year of school and something just popped up with his dad's health. If he truly wants to be near pops maybe he'll decide he can't have his cake and eat it too. And it seems to me that both he and UT are pretty much saying the MAC is garbage.

He followed a position coach, Charlie Baggett, to Tenn.

Baggett retired from Tenn and Arnett is transferring back home.

Seventeen year olds make those kind of decisions.

His 3 finalists I believe were Tenn, So. Cal and Cal.

None of which make sense to me, but...
So he chose to be closer to a position coach over an ailing father? And the coach meant so much to him that he barely chose that school over 2 other schools that couldn't be further from home? OK 17 year-olds don't make great decisions, even with such input from family and the health of his father at the forefront...but a few months later he can mature beyond his age and make the decision he should have made then? And if is only about Dad then the MAC schools should suffice.

I don't care about his father. It bothers me that playing sports in the NCAA is indentured servitude.

Don't pay players? I'm fine with that. Restrict their every decision? That appalls me.
