It was just a couple weeks ago that we were hearing rumors that Doeren reached out to Kansas about their head coaching job, now i read that Doeren reached out to Pitt about their head coaching job. I do not understand why he would be trying to get out of here, well i kind of do, he could be in for a rough year without Harnish next year. I am just wondering what other people think about this.

I am a big fan of Doeren and what he has done with our defense so far. He also seems to be a good recruiter. If this keeps up and we keep hearing about him reaching out to other schools about their head coaching jobs it is going to get old and I will start losing faith in him here at NIU.

I want a coach who is worrying about what he is doing here at NIU not continually reaching out to any and every head coaching job that opens up.

Here is a link to the article: http://blogs.sites.post-gazette.com/inde...-and-notes
The MAC is a triple A league for talented head coaches. It is what it is. Urban Meyer, Brady Hoke, Brian Kelly, Butch Jones, Turner Gill, the late Terry Hoeppner, Tim Beckham, Jerry Kill. I won't fault Doeren for being ambitious. If he succeeds at NIU then he will move on to bigger things. The key phrase in that is "if he succeeds at NIU," meaning good things happened for the Huskies. It's a win-win as far as I'm concerned.
I find it suspicious that both in this case and the KU coach search that both reporters said that he was the one who reach out to the school.

We should expect this as he is in the 50th percentile of pay of the MAC and the 10th percentile of pay in FBS.

The problem is he might "succeed" for 1 year and if that's good enough for a bigger program then he's gone. Which won't be a success for NIU. If he's around for at least 3 years that's a little different.
If I was a big time program I would like to see 3+ years of success. Doeren hasn't proved much at this point.
I'm all for upward mobility but a coach leaving after less than three years on a job is a disgrace in my opinion. They leave chaos in their wake when they move on that quickly. If he is actually exploring other jobs this early in his tenure then I am really disappointed in him. His ticket is punched as long as the wheels don't come off in the next two years. He will get his payday. In the meantime he will have to scrape by on $400K a year.

I agree. If you sign on to a new team, you shouldn't be looking to move on again after 1 year. I will be very unimpressed with him if he is in fact trying to move on already. To me it means that the players and the school mean precisely nothing to you as a coach.

I agree he is already the top candidate for K St for the 2014 season and I feel like some one should let him know of the likely opening and his likely candidacy.

Him going to Pitt would be ironic as the players at Pitt were really pissed about their coach leaving after a year. That being said I don't think the Pitt AD will even consider Doeren as it should be a red flag. If he is then he has no clue.
If anything I have a feeling Pitt goes with a coach that has been in d1 coach before and doesn't have sites on leaving....maybe Phil Fulmer? I'm surprised he hasn't gotten offers really.
Nothing would surprise me. College coaching is getting sleazier by the day.
Fickell and Chryst would be the top guys in my book...OR the interm coach for Penn St (with the condition that the red headed guy doesn't come with).

Wow I missed this story yesterday, very very very disappointing and it does show Coach Doeren does not think much of NIU.

It is time to change the hiring philosophy, stability is more important than a young up and comer. May sound like a loser mentality, but it is very damaging to the program to have a coach move on after every season.
DD is NOT going anywhere this year. He is just making it known that he will be available in the near future/

yeah but as a fan its hard to know the leader of your team wants out. Coaching has gotten so lazy...reap the rewards of previous administrations and move on. I think the proper term for this promotional strategy should be phillipsing
I wouldn't worry about if/when Doeren leaves. I get the feeling the plan on replacing him was put in place last offseason.

What do you think this plan is?
Do you even have to ask? I have zero knowledge of this, but with the interview they gave him last year and the fact, by all reports, he was a finalist, I'll be very surprised if the next coach is anybody other than Fleck.

Unless he gets a job somewhere else first, which I also doubt happens.
Also something to keep in mind is that all these local sportswriters are trying to get readers. Doeren was a hot young assistant (pause) at Wisconsin, and he only helped his stock this year. It's an obvious name to connect to any coaching search out there.

I would take it with a grain of salt.
He is applying for a job. No biggie. He is gauging interest. If they say no then back to niu. I am glad none of u ever applied for a job while at a job.
