For anyone who wants to hear the new UMass coach, TMD did a podcast with him this morning. He comes on around the 15-minute mark.
The most interesting thing to me was that he came out point blank and said that the key for MAC schools to keep their coaches is money. He then said that a MAC school should never lose its coach to Conference USA or the Mountain West. I agree whole heartedly.

Untill you have MAC schools willing to bump pay by at least several 100K per season, it'll continue to happen. Marshall pays Holliday $619,820 before bonuses, which is bottom half in the league. However it would be the highest in the MAC by nearly $200K . The only CUSA schools that pays less than a school in the MAC are UTEP and UAB*, but even then both would still be top third in the MAC.#

#Temple, Tulane and Tulsa don't release their coach's salaries.
The nMWC's average pay is about the same as CUSA's and the lowest salary is Nevada which is slightly lower than Ohio's, which is highest in the MAC.
That's not gonna happen. MAC can't afford it now.
Key for the MAC is for coaches and athletic departments to be constantly mentoring their replacement. Ought to be part of the interview process and job review.
Even C-USA schools have more budget because in general most of those schools have greater attendance and more TV revenues.

Slightly better pay like in CUSA will solve nothing. Just look at Houston, USM, and SMU. All would have or have lost their coach and the more money did not help. For instance the 600k Marshal is paying will not stop him from leaving when a better job come by. Unless you can find a guy that would stay regardless of who comes (like Boises coach so far) there is no reason to go crazy with the money because the coaches will leave anyway. If you do find that kind of coach that you think would stay then start paying him more as he deserves and I think MAC schools would do that.

Paying even $1 million is not going to keep these guys around when lower-level BCS schools are paying almost $2 million.
I think the MAC does as good as any conference in getting its money's worth. Most of the guys we hire are unproven anyway so it is senseless to pay them a lot.
If anything, pay the assistants. These are the guys actually working with the players one-on-one.

350k is in line with most MAC schools. The base pay may seem low, but the package includes things that are not really performance based as doing a coach's show etc. We are making a big jump in the MAC and it will take him years to start making a splash. If he makes us a winning program in 3 years, yes the big boys will come with offers. A few hundred thousands will not make a difference. We are excited about joining the MAC, but we are not foolish with affiliations whether it's the MAC or the Krafts, or paying the bills.
Naturally we would have paid more for some one with head coaching experience.

Charley Molnar has been in Amherst since Dec 8th and before leaving today received his first vebal for A.J. Doyle. A.J.'s Scout quarterback grade is 68 and two stars.
