For anyone who wants to hear the new UMass coach, TMD did a podcast with him this morning. He comes on around the 15-minute mark.

The most interesting thing to me was that he came out point blank and said that the key for MAC schools to keep their coaches is money. He then said that a MAC school should never lose its coach to Conference USA or the Mountain West. I agree whole heartedly.

Untill you have MAC schools willing to bump pay by at least several 100K per season, it'll continue to happen. Marshall pays Holliday $619,820 before bonuses, which is bottom half in the league. However it would be the highest in the MAC by nearly $200K . The only CUSA schools that pays less than a school in the MAC are UTEP and UAB*, but even then both would still be top third in the MAC.#

*UAB has recently hired a new coach, don't know salary
#Temple, Tulane and Tulsa don't release their coach's salaries.

The nMWC's average pay is about the same as CUSA's and the lowest salary is Nevada which is slightly lower than Ohio's, which is highest in the MAC.
That's not gonna happen. MAC can't afford it now.

Key for the MAC is for coaches and athletic departments to be constantly mentoring their replacement. Ought to be part of the interview process and job review.
Even C-USA schools have more budget because in general most of those schools have greater attendance and more TV revenues.

So did Iceland, Greece, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Spain, and Italy before becoming insolvent.
Slightly better pay like in CUSA will solve nothing. Just look at Houston, USM, and SMU. All would have or have lost their coach and the more money did not help. For instance the 600k Marshal is paying will not stop him from leaving when a better job come by. Unless you can find a guy that would stay regardless of who comes (like Boises coach so far) there is no reason to go crazy with the money because the coaches will leave anyway. If you do find that kind of coach that you think would stay then start paying him more as he deserves and I think MAC schools would do that.

+1

Paying even $1 million is not going to keep these guys around when lower-level BCS schools are paying almost $2 million.

I think the MAC does as good as any conference in getting its money's worth. Most of the guys we hire are unproven anyway so it is senseless to pay them a lot.

If anything, pay the assistants. These are the guys actually working with the players one-on-one.
Hi, my name's Charley, I'm the new guy in the office, I look forward to working with everyone. BTW, the pay here sucks, I'm leaving as soon as I get a better offer. Now, where do I put these TPS reports?
350k is in line with most MAC schools. The base pay may seem low, but the package includes things that are not really performance based as doing a coach's show etc. We are making a big jump in the MAC and it will take him years to start making a splash. If he makes us a winning program in 3 years, yes the big boys will come with offers. A few hundred thousands will not make a difference. We are excited about joining the MAC, but we are not foolish with affiliations whether it's the MAC or the Krafts, or paying the bills.

Naturally we would have paid more for some one with head coaching experience.

I believe that Addazio is making around $800K at Temple

Who did Iceland have greater attendance than? And I NEVER see them on the tube and I'm a huge fan of the Iceland Geysers. I was even hoping they'd end up in the MAC (far) East when the realignment came but LouisAirportKC says no, either Stonybrook or Tennessee will get that slot..

Its all about Mighty Ducks 2. Iceland rocked it. Iceland is full of green and Greenland is full of ice.

Yes...

Buffalo made a real mistake not going with Danny Barret when Gill left..
Charley Molnar has been in Amherst since Dec 8th and before leaving today received his first vebal for A.J. Doyle. A.J.'s Scout quarterback grade is 68 and two stars.

Quote:Doyle initially committed to NC State last summer, but as a linebacker. Only the Minutemen and Western Michigan had extended a scholarship offer to him to play quarterback at the FBS level. In talks with Molnar, Doyle wasn't just told he has a chance at playing early, but that he would be "a cornerstone recruit for everything he'd try to do here."

Quote:Apparently, the upgrade to FBS and the hiring or Molnar is making a positive impact on merchandise. The UMass football t-shirts on the UMass online store are sold out.

Quote:In the eight days since he was named football coach at the University of Massachusetts, Charley Molnar's phone has been almost as busy as he has.

"My phone has been blowing up," said the 50-year-old Notre Dame offensive coordinator. "I'm receiving well over 100 phone calls a day over the last six or seven days. I've received hundreds of emails or text messages."

Molnar stayed in Amherst since the Dec. 8 press conference that announced his hiring. Before leaving Thursday, first for a recruiting trip, then for South Bend, Ind., to help the Fighting Irish prepare for the Dec. 29 Champs Sports Bowl, Molnar spent nearly every waking moment, and there were far more waking than sleeping ones, getting started.

After the press conference, Molnar had a chance to meet with New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, coach Bill Belichick and safety James Ihedigbo, a UMass graduate. Molnar said he and Belichick talked more about people they knew than football.

Quote:UMass was one of the first schools to express an interest in Catholic Memorial’s A.J. Doyle as a quarterback.

Earlier today, UMass got its prize when the two-time All-Scholastic signal caller gave a verbal commitment.

“A.J. met with (new UMass coach) Charley Molnar this afternoon and committed to them,” said Adam Doyle, A.J.’s father. “He’s totally excited to get a chance to play in the MAC.”

Doyle had originally given a verbal commitment to NC State, who recruited him as a linebacker. But his quest to become a college quarterback proved to be so strong that he decided to reopen his recruitment earlier this fall.
