Other than the obvious lack of geographic cohesion, it's a better mix than what we had before, and I think all the new additions will improve from where they were.
I think that geographic cohesion made sense in a pre internet age... Now our world seems so much closer (I mean it's a flight to florida from UC anyways... a few extra hours of airtime to SD isn't a big deal.) that being geographically near shouldn't be as important. If we can improve the quality of these programs athletically, I think the national conference system could work pretty nicely, especially with a boise anchor (and I think UC definitely has the potential to be an anchor school too in the eastern division)
Still waiting to see who 11 or 12 could be. If stick with 10 thats ok with me. Better football than what we had. Basketball taking a step down will help most of the programs in the Big East that have tradition but have struggled to get back to the top like St. John's, Cincinnati, Providence, DePaul, Seton Hall, Notre Dame, and even new member Houston.

I'm liking it a lot!

Miserable midwest.

Sunshiney Florida with the beaches and Disney World.

Outdoorsy Idaho, skiing, and those fresh spuds to boot.

The great state of Texas in the winter, and all the deeeeeeliscious Texas & Tex-Mex food.

Laid back San Diego talkin' spanish with an attitude, Knott's Berry Farm and Disneyland a short trip north. Baja Cali but only if the banditos don't get you before you reach your destination.

Fast talking, crazy driving, east coasters from the Jersey shore and a bit of New England thrown in for free.

Add Niagra Falls, and you have a perfect Japanese tour itenerary.

Look for Navy and Air Force to work through their issues and join soon. That will add another national influence in both the media realm as well as governmental oversight to the possible loss of AQ status.
Houston was fortunate to land 2 top 50 local guys so their class ranking is overvalued at this point. However other than the Cougars the basketball side is going to take a huge hit. They took a risk adding anyone other than Boise + who ever they wanted.
It's a conference anyway. Better than nothing at all.

I'm just glad we'll have a schedule.
I feel like a teenage that moved into a new neighborhood full of kids..

I know 4 of them from school, and we get along ok

I know two or three from school, but they were never in my classes
and live several blocks over,,could care less about them until now

I know one by his first name alone,,and he better not start anything or he's going to get punked when he comes in my backyard
In short term it's the best we could have hoped for. Still hoping they eventually find a way into a conference with more credibility, but better to be at the dance than sitting outside the door. Still believe the talk of a neutral or NYC championship game is retarded. Our conference has more attendance issues than the ACC and yet we think this will work. Especially with the conference being spread from east to west. Makes no sense.
So these teams won't join until the 2013 season, correct? And the BCS as we know it probably goes away after 2013?

I'm just wondering if this configuration of teams will even play a season together. The Big 12 could still go after Louisville or even UC. The ACC could raid again for UConn or possibly Rutgers.

I hope it actually does stick. I think it is a bold idea that can work.
Not really a fan of the new composition (I'd much prefer the Big 12 like everyone else), but it's better than nothing. I like the Houston and Boise adds. Never cared for UCF, but I can see their upside. SMU and SDSU will probably grow on me with time.
The odd thing is the pairs, and which gets split for divisions:
Rutgers UConn
UC Louisville
UCF USF
SMU Houston
SDSU Boise St
The divisions will be pretty simple once Navy and Air Force join in.

EAST
Cincinnati
Rutgers
UConn
Louisville
USF
UCF

WEST
Boise
SD St.
Houston
SMU
Air Force
Navy (they will be put in the west to have the natural rival with AF)
Last I heard the talk was to make UCF bite the bullet and join the West with the concession that they'd have an annual game with USF.
It's an abomination of a conference and will continue to be derided on the WWL and other national outlets for the foreseeable future. As much as people want to pretend that doesn't matter and that ESPN is full of crap, it's undeniable that the network shapes perspective and opinion -- which can be a benefit or a detriment when you are trying to recruit and build a program. It's also a whole lot of nothing, stability wise, until ALL of the schools (looking at you LOU and UCONN) sign their media rights over to the conference and guarantee they'll be around for the next 5-10 years.

But....it's probably the best possible situation, short of a lifeline from another AQ conference. So, begrudgingly, I have to enjoy it.
I'm excited about this....

it will serve us well until we get a B12 invite with UofL in couple years
I'm excited to see UC play Boise St. and to a lesser extent, Houston in football.

But does anyone think that those two squads are going to come in and dominate the Big East like they have the MWC and CUSA? I don't think they will. And then when they pick up a few losses people will say: "Bah, see! Those teams were not any good anyways, they can't even win in the Big East."

And if Boise and Houston do come in and tear it up, then people will say: "See how bad the Big East is? Boise and Houston are ravaging them!"

From here on out, I'm pretty sure the national media will give us a heaping spoonful of: we're damned if we do, and damned if we don't. Best to just ignore it, accept what we have, and try to enjoy it.
Well, let's see. Current BCS has Boise St. (8), Houston (19), and the only current Big East member at (23), West Virginia.

Seems to me to be an upgrade. Football isn't my thing (although I played it for 8 years, if you can believe that). But I am excited about playing Boise St..

Air Force and Navy don't do much for me. I wish they would add Memphis (for all sports) and maybe Temple (for all sports). Improves B-ball by adding those two teams.
Any word on just how draconian the exit conditions for the new configuration of the conference will be?

Sounds like the hillbillies will be stuck in the BE next year. Considering the B12 TV contract requires at least 10 teams, and right now stand at 9 for next season, they're kinda screwed.
