If Jones leaves the program is in much better shape than prior to his arrival, fair statement?
I think SMU will be just fine. They have recruited very well by CUSA standards, and they are willing to pay top dollar for their next coach. For whatever reason, JJ hasn't gotten it done, but the talent is there, and will continue to improve.

I'd say so.. 3 bowls in 4 years was previously unthinkable after the Death Penalty. And I believe they relaxed their academic requirements to be able to compete for the more elite athletes.

That said, I think Orsini will bring in an established coach with good credentials. His last two hires were O'leary and J. Jones. They were BIG GETS at the time. It should be interesting.
It will be just like when Hoke left SDSU. Everybody thought we'd fall of a cliff, but Jones and Hoke fixed the biggest problems in our respective athletic departments...apathy. I REALLY hope SMU can hold onto Klemm, he's a huge part of Jones' success at SMU. The guy is killing it recruiting CA.
I have always liked Steve Orsini, including way back when he played football for Notre Dame.

He and Matt Doherty are old, familar names to Notre Dame fans.

It will be interesting to see Matt Doherty back at the Joyce Center when SMU plays ND in basketball.

Orsini is a very good GM and has made several very good hires.

I had hoped that the would get the ND athletic director's job when Kevin White was forced out and went to Duke.

My understanding is that the two finalists were Steve Orsini and Jack Swarbrick.
Some UC fans on different boards speak well of Orsini.
Sucks right now and people are pissed that June did this on the day we are celebrating the Big East. Word started getting out that JJ was leaving last week and shortly thereafter Orsini started getting calls from current coaches and agents.

June helped get us out of the dumps, but he is not the person to take the program to the next level. If you saw how we started 5-1 and then went 1-5, you can see the moment the team gave up on him. Luckily Arizona State has to cut us a check for $2,000,000.

What are the rumors regarding coaching candidates at SMU?

Yeah, the timing really did suck regarding Jones' leaving for Arizona State. SMU will be fine, though.
Some nice names being bantered around. Texas ties are a priority this go round. I have full faith in Steve O.
Getting funny now, ASU is backing off hiring him.

I think you guys should help him leave. You guys could use some new blood.
Oh he's going, but he thought he had a job and they just yanked it

Much better shape. We let Jones recruit on an even playing field with our peer schools. He was the first coach since the death penalty to be given that sort of academic latitude to recruit.

We are much bigger than one Hawaiian Zombie.

What happened? My twitter made reference to a ASU booster or boosters but I didn't see any other explanation.
Lots of dirt coming out about the guy.

Ever since June Jones’ candidacy has been announced, the outcry of the Sun Devlis’ boosters has reached deafening levels. Consequently, contract negotiation talks between the SMU coach and ASU that appeared to be quickly approaching the finish line have now ended due to unprecedented resistance by some of the major ASU supporters.

ASU's major supporters also had some serious questions about June Jones' background at his various coaching stops, which have also contributed to this Wednesday afternoon development.

Stay tuned to Devils Digest for all the latest on this story.
Enjoy the Hawaii/June Jones, Cincinnati Bearcat fight!

What a boomerang of a deal.

Jones accepts job, leaving SMU before their bowl game, then ASU supporters up in arms about the hire and the school pulls the deal.

Is Jones going to be allowed back to SMU?

Weird!

Yeah, the timing really did suck regarding Jones' leaving for Arizona State. SMU will be fine, though.

1) I heard today here in Dallas that the offensive coordinator at Clemson may be a candidate for the SMU job. I don't know if that's true and I don't even know his name. But he was a high school coach about 90 miles southwest of Dallas and he knows this area.

2) The SMU program will be fine. I'm grateful to Jones for getting us off the mat, but now we could use a younger, more energetic coach. I hope he leaves and we don't have to fire him because we would owe something like $8 million to him on the rest of his contract. Actually, it was the wealthy boosters that would be paying him, but still ......
If Jones has already resigned from the job to take another job, SMU doesn't owe him diddly. The fact that the job opportunity that caused him to leave the SMU job isn't available for him is irrelevant. He's already officially left SMU. So the Ponies don't owe him a thing...
