That is going to be a real pathetic game. The only team in NCAA Div 1 history to start out 6-0 and then lose 6 versus the we need a special waiver from the NCAA to participate in the bowl because we have a losing record. A real fan favorite!
It'll be a contest to see who wants to lose more...
Later on the article mentions what a tremendous injustice it is that 7-5 Western Kentucky did not get invited to a bowl game. 03-weeping

Well, boo hoo! In 2003, there was a team that got snubbed after going 10-2.

A 9-2 NIU team in 1989, too.

2002 the team went 8-4 with no bowl.

Things were different back then, Bowl games were *snicker* about *chuckle* the game and *chuckle* not *snicker* about money.

A 9-2 NIU team in 1989, too.

2002 the team went 8-4 with no bowl.
This maybe, if not is the saddest year ever for bowls.

70 teams....

14 teams @ 7-5....4 of which were below .500 in conference, 2 more @ .500
13 teams @ 6-6.....9 of which were below .500 in conference, including 3 @ 2-6

and of course then the UCLA Bruins below .500 @ 6-7.

Some stellar teams.

But then again, if there wasn't 34 bowls plus BCS championship....like maybe 20,25 the MAC would have 1-2 teams in a bowl while all those 6-6 teams went. And it's nice to see how the NCAA has removed the criteria of having to be .500 or better vs. FBS teams. Seems the only way some reach that lowered bar of 6-6 these days.

AND that 2003 team beat some big time schools and was in the top 25!!! Still hard to believe there was no bowl game that year.

Exactly! And it's perfect for the Illness. After all, they scheduled a bunch of cupcake games for the beginning of their season to make sure they would be bowl eligible...this is what they deserve IMHO.

Um two of their opponents you are calling "cupcake" games are two teams we have and will play this year...The first WMU most of us didn't have any confidance when they came to our house. Arkansas St looked like a cupcake but turned out to have a great season. Actually their best win vs a then ranked ASU looks to be a ho-hum victory now that we can look back.

Also it also helps that they played 8 home games this year.
Wasn't Northwestern 6-6 and played BG in the Motor City Bowl that year?
That was the part that really pissed me and any NIU fan off.

Didn't say they were ALL cupcake games...I said a bunch of cupcake games. And you're right - 8 home games for them helped a lot. They (Illness) set it up so they would have a big advantage this year and would get their 6 wins to be bowl eligible. I think it's funny that they got what is being referred to as the saddest bowl game. But then I am a big Illness hater! ;-)

Well, technically, it worked, right? 03-wink The Zooker needed all the help he could get...

Yes, that happened in 2003. The beauty of conference tie-ins.
As an Illini or Purdue fan it's gotta hurt knowing the Ticket City Bowl would rather play host to the Penn State Fighting Satans than your team.
Perhaps UCLA and the Illini should transpose their fight songs to D minor for that game, as it is the saddest of all keys. It could cause instant weeping from all who are present.

I don't think the appeal of either university since the 1984 Rose Bowl has waned, I think their appeal has become more selective.
