Jones likely staying at UC

It appears that Butch Jones will remain the football coach at UC next year.

Sources have confirmed that Jones has turned down the chance to speak to officials from schools ranging from the ACC to the Big Ten to the Pac-12.

Jones has been mentioned as a candidate at North Carolina of the ACC, UCLA of the Pac-12 and Illinois of the Big 12, but apparently has all but decided to remain at UC, where he has gone 13-11 in two seasons and won a share of the Big East championship this year. The Bearcats will play Vanderbilt in the Liberty Bowl on Dec. 31.

The UC coach is on his way to signing the most highly-rated recruiting class in UC history. The Bearcats’ 2012 class is currently ranked 26th by Rivals.com and 23rd by Scout.com. He has been in discussions with athletic director Whit Babcock about the future of the UC program.
"Turned down the chance," meaning, didn't make the cut and is saving face? [/sarcasm]

No matter, I'm glad he's staying, and particularly glad Bill is reporting it. For one, if Bill is reporting something positive, you KNOW it must be fact. Plus, love him or hate him, Koch is not someone who throws crap against the wall until it sticks.
How do you know he did not make the cut?....unless you know don't post..maybe with the highest recruitng class and tha additions of Boise, SMU, Houston UCF and San Diego it makes the Big East alot more stable...and throwing crap against the wall...that's just what you did with your "Saving Face " comment...
LOL! Take your meds Hoops 03-lmfao Maybe it's just me, but I still have grim memories of BK, and I was just making light of it.

The part where I said I'm glad he's staying was dead serious.
Love it.
Very glad Coach Jones is staying, because I want that good recruiting class to come in and I want to see how the team goes when Coach Jones has mostly players he recruited.

I have to admit I have been greatly impressed with the progress the defense has made throughout the season.
I think the key to keeping any good head coach is providing them the tools to be able to succeed, like enough money to pay decent assistants that stick around a while, and enough support to scour the Earth for recruits.
First of all I don't take meds...and if you have taken any notice of UC Football the last 2 years you would know there is no comparison between Kelly and Jones...
Illinois seems like a coaching graveyard to me.

UNC is going to have issues with probation.

UCLA seems like a looong way from home.

I think Butch stays put this year, but there's definitely a chance he leaves if the right suitor comes calling. Don't know what it would take.

You could say the same thing for nearly all of his fellow BCS head coaches.

That's the key point to be made. Unless you are a fan of one of the 10 or so true elites in this sport. Alabama, OSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, USC, Florida etc you always have to worry about getting your coach poached. It comes with the territory. Doubly so for a program like UC which is a nouveau riche program with a long history, but not a long history of success at the highest level.

Jones name is always going to come up because he is young, has a track record and has a flawless reputation among his peers. That is the reality of the program, and will be for a while. Most Decembers are going to be just like this

I see Butch as a midwest kind of guy. I think he would leave in a New York minute for one of the plum Big-1? jobs, but fortunately none of those is going to be open anytime soon. Minnesota -nah, Indiana-don't think so, Northwestern-nah, Iowa and Purdue-maybe. Penn State is hard to read because even though it's in the Big1? it's still an eastern school.
I'm glad he is staying. Things are moving in the right direction.
Jones strikes me as a "the longer he stays, the more likely he is to stay" kind of guy. The key, if you think he's a good bet to succeed long-term, is to keep him from wandering in these first few years and give him a chance to put down some roots.
Glad he's staying, but sorry that he let the rumors get as far as they did. We're paying him over a million a year, with the potential to earn more, and we don't deserve to be hurt by his lack of loyalty.

And, make no mistake, it does hurt recruiting.

At least you didn't say that "the needle was pointing in the right direction"!
The key to the future of UC football is more revenue. More butts in the seats at Nippert is critical. No reason why every game there ought not to be a sellout, including non-conference games and especially games against conference rivals where the league championship is at stake. We also need more donors. There are fewer than 200 1200 Club members, which is laughable for a BCS program.
Well if Butch really turned down those jobs thats encouraging. I think some people get the perception that as soon as any other BCS level job opens up a Cincinnati coach will leave just like that. Even BK turned down Washington and Georgia Tech.
sometimes you just need luck for a coach to stay. Whether it's family or a particular job he really wanted, but was #2 on their list. After you miss out you either become desperate and bolt for some job you shouldn't or you become comfortable. I don't care how or which way it works out, just want the program to continue to build. A couple more years with continued solid recruiting classes, watch out.
As long as UC stays in an AQ conference coaches would be better served to stay than go to a school in a bigger conference where the pressure is higher and the odds of getting beat up by big fish in that conference remain great.
